CHANGCHUN, April 2 -- The city of Hunchun in Jilin Province, located near the Chinese-Russian border, is experiencing a surge in medical tourism from Russian visitors.

With a population of about 200,000, Hunchun has become a notable destination for those seeking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies, leveraging its proximity to Russia and a newly established mutual visa-free travel policy for group visitors.

Among the recent visitors is Alexei Leonov, a 57-year-old tourist who recently underwent a health check at the Hunchun Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.

Leonov expressed satisfaction with his experience, which included TCM massage and acupuncture therapy, alongside cultural activities such as calligraphy.

He noted the calming effects of a foot soak in TCM-infused water, highlighting the appeal of both health and cultural immersion.

The hospital features a nursing service center, established last year, to cater to the specific medical needs of Russian tourists.

According to Liu Guangliang, the hospital's vice president, the center accommodates over 80 Russian tourists daily at peak times, often receiving families who stay for extended periods.

Visitors engage in a range of activities from hiking to birdwatching, combined with personalized TCM health care.

Acknowledging the typically harsh winters in Russia, the hospital has tailored TCM health care plans and dietary offerings, including dishes like ginseng stewed chicken, intended to promote recovery and bolster health for its patients.

Additionally, the hospital's international department staff fluent in Russian provide seamless services during health checks and consultations.

The medical tourism trend is not limited to Hunchun alone, as neighboring areas are also benefiting.

The village of Piyanshan Hot Spring in Longjing, situated over 100 kilometers away, has adapted to attract Russian visitors with its mineral-rich hot springs, thought to possess therapeutic properties.

Resort features include pools infused with TCM elements, red wine, milk, and fruit, enhancing the wellness experience.

Regular visitor Irina Kostyrko noted the efficacy of moxibustion treatments for her lumbar issues, which she first learned about from a friend.

Kostyrko's commitment to visiting Hunchun twice a year underscores the popularity of TCM as a remedy for ailments associated with the cold climates of Russia.

The demand for TCM is also reflected in the crowded waiting areas of local regimen shops.

Han Shiming, the head of Hanyijiu TCM shop, reported an influx of Russian tourists, particularly from major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, seeking relief for conditions such as cervical spondylosis.

In addition to TCM services, the Hunchun Euroasia Diagnostic and Medical Center is witnessing considerable foot traffic as Russian visitors queue for medical procedures.

Feedback from patients, such as a woman named Mira from Vladivostok, indicates high satisfaction with the medical care available, citing the need for no prior appointments for consultations and the quality of medical equipment.

This trend in medical tourism reflects the growing appreciation for TCM among Russian visitors, many of whom have come to regard Hunchun as a second home, praising the city's ability to provide both physical healing and a welcoming atmosphere.
