AI Technology Transforms Autism Rehabilitation in China

AI Technology Transforms Autism Rehabilitation in China

Innovative AI applications enhance intervention methods for children with autism spectrum disorder across the nation.
GUANGZHOU, April 2 -- In a notable advancement within China's autism rehabilitation sector, AI technology is emerging as a vital tool in aiding children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

At the Dami & Xiaomi Autism Rehabilitation Center in Shenzhen, three-year-old Haohao (pseudonym) is receiving specialized therapy aimed at improving his speech development.

During a recent session, therapist Yu Canyang encouraged Haohao to vocalize sounds, employing a tablet to record his progress.

Following each appointment, an AI system facilitates the generation of a detailed progress report along with a tailored home training regimen for Haohao's family.

The Dami & Xiaomi center has designed classroom environments that emulate the warmth and colorfulness of kindergartens, providing an inviting atmosphere conducive to the development of crucial social skills.

Given that the first word for many non-verbal children may require years of persistent therapy, the center addresses the significant gap in autism support, highlighted by a report indicating only 654 registered autism rehabilitation centers in the country, whereas the autism community numbers over 10 million, including more than 3 million children aged 14 and under.

Data from the China National Health Commission illustrates that there are roughly 100,000 rehabilitation therapists in the country, with only 20,000 formally registered.

Significantly, each therapist is typically tasked with supporting no more than four children weekly.

Zou Xiaobing, chief physician at the child behavioral development center under the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, emphasizes the importance of data-driven analysis in optimizing treatment recommendations for children with similar behavioral profiles.

Advanced intervention outcomes can potentially enhance the quality of care provided to autistic children.

In November 2024, Dami & Xiaomi, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), unveiled RICE AI, a cutting-edge application designed to assist children facing challenges related to autism and language impairments.

This innovative program utilizes large data sets and behavioral analytics to provide assessment, therapeutic intervention, and home training resources.

Since its establishment in 2014, the Dami & Xiaomi center has effectively gathered extensive data on children's development, with over 80 million tagged behavioral data points now being utilized to inform the AI system.

This sophisticated approach not only streamlines diagnostic processes—reducing assessment report generation from three hours to under 30 minutes—but also allows therapists to focus more on direct engagement with children.

The AI solution further automates the creation of personalized educational materials such as picture books, specifically designed to cater to the unique cognitive preferences of children with autism.

The production timeline for these resources has been dramatically reduced from two months to just 10 minutes, alleviating a significant burden from families engaged in autism care.

As more rehabilitation centers across China explore AI transformations, facilities like ALSOLIFE and ING Care in Beijing are also investigating the potential of digital therapeutics tailored for autism.

Concurrently, the development of specialized AI models like 'Starlight', and therapeutic tools generated by Alibaba's AI application Tongyi, is contributing to a shift in intervention strategies within the sector.

Anticipating a collaborative future, Dami & Xiaomi will integrate its AI capabilities into a unified platform that aims to foster information sharing among professionals in the field.

By opening access to their data and technological advancements, the organization seeks to empower more rehabilitation centers to enhance their support for families navigating autism challenges.
