China's Feitian Spacesuits Achieve New Milestones in Extravehicular Activities

The Feitian spacesuits exceed expectations with longevity and advanced features during recent spacewalks.
China's pioneering Feitian spacesuits, designed for extravehicular activities (EVAs), have surpassed their anticipated lifespan, achieving a notable milestone after the Shenzhou-19 crew completed its third spacewalk.

The spacesuits, named 'Feitian,' which translates to 'flying into space,' have exceeded their projected capacity of '15 uses within 3 years,' as confirmed by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.

One such suit has reportedly been utilized up to 17 times, highlighting its reliability and durability under rigorous operational conditions.

These extravehicular spacesuits are essential for astronauts conducting tasks outside the confines of the space station.

The designs incorporate numerous features beyond those found in intravehicular spacesuits, including mechanisms for radiation protection, heat insulation, micrometeorite shielding, and ultraviolet protection.

Furthermore, the suits are equipped with robust telemetry communication systems to ensure constant performance monitoring.

To maintain thermal stability, the Feitian suits incorporate a liquid cooling system.

They also feature a backpack-style life support system that ensures astronauts are provided with the necessary atmospheric pressure, oxygen supply, and ideal temperature and humidity levels while outside the spacecraft.

Yang Yuguang, chair of the Space Transportation Committee of the International Astronautical Federation, remarked on the complexity of the extravehicular spacesuits, noting the additional layers required to withstand the challenges of spacewalks.

These suits not only provide a pressure differential essential for survival but also contain systems to effectively manage temperature.

The current generation of the Feitian suit weighs approximately 130 kilograms and is valued at around 30 million yuan, approximately $4.14 million per unit.

During the recent Shenzhou-19 mission, the astronauts engaged in a prolonged EVA that lasted over seven hours, where they executed multiple critical tasks.

To address the significant physical exertion required during these lengthy extravehicular activities, the Feitian spacesuits include built-in provisions to sustain astronauts' energy levels.

The helmet features a drinking tube, enabling astronauts to hydrate without hindrance, while a designated compartment provides energy bars specifically tailored to the demands of the mission, offering high-calorie sustenance to help maintain their strength throughout the tasks conducted in space.
