China and EU Commemorate 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

China and EU Commemorate 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

The partnership celebrates rapid trade growth and deepening political ties amid changing global dynamics.
China and the European Union (EU) have marked the 50th anniversary of their formal diplomatic relations, which began on May 6, 1975, when the European Economic Community, the predecessor of the EU, established connections with Beijing.

This historic alignment emerged against the backdrop of the Cold War, with both parties seeking to expand their diplomatic reach and diversify international relationships.

Since their initial engagement, bilateral trade has experienced a staggering growth rate, rising from $2.4 billion in the mid-1970s to nearly $786 billion in 2025, a 300-fold increase attributed to extensive strategic, economic, and political cooperation between China and Europe.

The reform and opening-up period initiated by China in the late 1970s facilitated European companies' entry into the Chinese market.

A landmark event was the establishment of the Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. Ltd. joint venture in 1984, which played a significant role in modernizing China's automotive industry.

China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 2001 further accelerated trade relations.

From 2000 to 2009, EU exports to China jumped from €26 billion to €82 billion, while imports surged from €75 billion to €215 billion.

By 2016, the total annual trade value in goods reached €514.8 billion, primarily driven by industrial and manufactured products.

In 2003, China and the EU elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which allowed for enhanced collaboration on various fronts.

The following year, both parties agreed to a joint declaration on climate change, aimed at fostering cooperation in policy development, technology transfer, and clean energy initiatives.

The establishment of the China-Europe Railway Express in 2011 marked a significant development in logistics, becoming a central element of the Belt and Road Initiative.

By November 2024, it had completed over 100,000 trips, linking over 220 cities across Eurasia and transporting goods valued above $420 billion.

This railway network provides a unique transport option, being faster than shipping but more economical than air freight, as remarked by Bernd Noche, a transport systems expert at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

On the political front, discussions around deepening mutual trust were underscored during the Munich Security Conference in February 2025. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that there are no fundamental conflicts of interest between China and the EU and called for a commitment to their strategic partnership based on mutual respect and long-term stability.

He articulated the need for utilizing the 50th anniversary as a foundation to enhance future collaboration.

China and the EU have also affirmed their support for the central role of the United Nations and emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving international issues.

Both parties oppose unilateral actions that undermine collective efforts.

The principles of mutual respect and the pursuit of common ground while accommodating differences continue to guide China-EU relations, promoting cooperation over competition.
