China Sees Surge in International Visitors During May Day Holiday

China Sees Surge in International Visitors During May Day Holiday

The first holiday under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy witnesses increased tourist activity, particularly from ASEAN countries.
During the recent May Day holiday, China welcomed an increasing number of international visitors, marking the first holiday period since the introduction of a 240-hour visa-free transit policy.

This policy allows smoother entry for foreign tourists, particularly from ASEAN nations.

For instance, 43 tourists from Laos entered China via the Mohan railway port in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, completing their entry in under 15 minutes on May 2.

As night fell along the Lancang River, new arrivals engaged in cultural activities, with one tourist initiating their journey by recording a video, while another was immersed in local Dai ethnic herbal medicine practices within the rainforest.

An American traveler at Fuzhou Changle International Airport in Fujian Province highlighted the efficiency of the customs process, stating, 'The customs clearance was really fast and the service was excellent!' This traveler planned to explore local culture and cuisine before heading to iconic spots like West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

Fuzhou Changle International Airport reportedly manages over 5,300 passenger movements daily due to the effective implementation of various visa exemption frameworks.

Since the relaxation of the visa-free transit policy last December, foreign travelers from 54 eligible countries can now stay for up to 240 hours, with additional ports designated for visa-free access.

Wu Jianqi, head of a duty team at the airport's frontier inspection station, noted, 'Multiple visa-free policies have allowed foreign visitors to extend their stays and expand travel plans,' reflecting a growing interest in China's tourism offerings.

Routes that allow tourists to visit Hong Kong and Macao before entering mainland China, particularly through Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, have gained popularity among Southeast Asian travelers.

A return visitor from the Philippines commended the friendliness of the Chinese populace and the efficiency of the entry process.

Tour guide Ms. Luo, with two decades of experience, confirmed that itineraries for these travelers are increasingly comprehensive, illustrating the development of tourism infrastructure in the area.

Mr. Lin, a Malaysian Chinese returning to China after 15 years, emphasized the cultural significance of his visit, stating that it served as a means of reconnecting his family with their roots.

The National Immigration Administration (NIA) has predicted that the five-day May Day holiday will see an average of 2.15 million daily border crossings, reflecting a 27 percent increase year-on-year.

Lin Yongsheng, director-general of the Department of Policies and Regulations at the NIA, stated that the organization will continue to enhance entry-exit and residence policies, aiming to facilitate smoother customs clearance and foster exchanges between Chinese and foreign nationals.
