China and UK Commit to Enhanced Climate Change Collaboration

High-level meetings in Beijing emphasize cooperation in combating climate change and promoting bilateral ties.
Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang met with UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband in Beijing on March 17, 2025. Their discussions centered on strengthening cooperation in the realm of climate change.

Vice Premier Ding underscored that fostering stable and mutually beneficial relations between China and the UK aligns with the interests of both nations and can facilitate global economic growth.

He expressed China's readiness to work alongside the UK in implementing key agreements between both countries’ leaders, aiming to bolster bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in financial services, trade, investment, and low-carbon development initiatives.

Miliband articulated the UK's intentions to enhance engagement with China, affirming a commitment to a long-term constructive bilateral relationship.

He noted the importance of collaboration on energy security and climate action.

In a separate engagement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul on March 21, 2025, in Tokyo.

They discussed the historical and strategic partnership between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK), emphasizing the stability of diplomatic ties despite changes in domestic circumstances in the ROK.

Wang reinforced China's policy of maintaining good neighborly relations and encouraged the ROK to pursue friendship-oriented policies toward China.

The discussions also highlighted China’s economic resilience and its commitment to providing opportunities for neighboring countries, including the ROK.

Both parties expressed intentions to expand cooperation in various sectors, including under the framework of the China-ROK Free Trade Agreement, which marks its 10th anniversary this year.

On March 22, during the sixth China-Japan High-Level Economic Dialogue, Wang Yi met with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya in Tokyo.

Wang noted the significant growth in bilateral trade since the normalization of diplomatic relations, stating that trade has surged over 300 times, maintaining a consistent high level of approximately 300 billion US dollars annually.

He further highlighted the necessity for both countries to enhance economic cooperation amid rising protectionism globally.

Wang outlined four key areas for expanding cooperation: upgrading economic trade partnerships, balancing mutual concerns, strengthening regional alliances, and encouraging joint efforts in innovative fields such as artificial intelligence and environmental protection.

Both nations agreed to resume negotiations on the China-Japan-ROK Free Trade Agreement and to work towards the establishment of an Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area.

Subsequently, during meetings with Toshihiro Nikai, a key figure in Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, Wang expressed China's intention to deepen cooperation, particularly among youth, to foster enduring bilateral relations.

In a broader context, the theme of the 65th World Meteorological Day on March 23 was acknowledged, with a focus on the pressing need for robust meteorological early warning systems amid climate change challenges.

The China Meteorological Administration is working toward enhancing such systems to support global initiatives aimed at climate resilience.
