Nanlao Spring, located at Jinci Temple in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, has made a remarkable return, re-establishing its flow after being dry for more than 30 years.

This resurgence follows extensive efforts in groundwater management and ecological conservation within the region.

Once a popular attraction celebrated by the poet Li Bai for its crystal-clear waters, the spring was significantly affected by excessive groundwater extraction and the overdevelopment of coal mining activities in its vicinity during the 1990s.

The spring, which is also known as the Never Aging Spring, began flowing again in May 2023, marking an important milestone in the restoration of natural water resources in North China.

The groundwater level has reportedly risen to a height exceeding one meter at several of the spring's fountainheads, drawing numerous visitors to Jinci Temple.

Elderly residents, including 82-year-old Zhai Tianhu, have expressed joy over the water's revival, noting the strong flow and its significance to the community.

Efforts to bring the spring back to life involved shutting down water-intensive coal mines and implementing water resource replacement initiatives.

In response to the spring's resurgence, Jinci Temple was awarded the designation of a national 5A-level tourist attraction, recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

This accolade underscores the cultural and historical importance of the site, which has been revered for over 2,400 years.

The temple itself, founded in the 11th century BC, is the oldest existing royal ancestral temple in the country, honoring Shuyu of Tang and his mother, Yi Jiang.

Local officials, including Wang Runmei, a deputy to the National People's Congress, highlighted the resurgence of Nanlao Spring as a significant achievement for ecological preservation efforts in the Yellow River Basin, further emphasizing the ongoing improvements in Shanxi's ecological environment.

To sustain the spring’s revival, local authorities have been diligent in monitoring the water flow, temperature, and quality in collaboration with the water conservancy department.
