Zhongguancun Forum 2025: Showcasing China's Technological Evolution

The annual conference highlights China's advancements in innovation and global technology cooperation.
The 2025 Zhongguancun (ZGC) Forum Annual Conference was recently held in Beijing, marking a significant event in the landscape of global technology and innovation.

The conference showcased a variety of innovations, underscoring China's technological capabilities with an emphasis on AI, robotics, and beyond.

The forum featured an AI agent, more than 100 intelligent robotic "volunteers," and a seamless interactive experience, presenting a vision of a technologically advanced future.

Since its establishment in 2007, the ZGC forum has evolved into a crucial venue for international technological exchanges and partnerships.

This year's theme, "New Quality Productive Forces and Global Technology Cooperation," focused on critical emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence large models, embodied intelligence, quantum technology, biomedicine, 6G, and brain-computer interfaces.

Significant insights from the conference included the release of China's National Innovation Index Report 2024, alongside a listing of the country's top 10 scientific advances for the year.

These reports highlighted China's rapid technological progression and reaffirmed the forum's value as a benchmark for cutting-edge technologies and new industry developments.

Technological innovation has become increasingly essential for nurturing new quality productive forces, resulting in the growth of novel industries and business models.

The conference introduced 100 new technologies and products, 100 international tech trade innovation projects, and a smart service platform aimed at enhancing tech commercialization, alongside the signing of 11 major cooperation agreements.

This suite of advancements showcases China's vibrant innovation culture and the potential for driving economic momentum.

In recent years, China has adopted an innovation-driven development strategy, with technological advancements contributing approximately 60 percent to its economic growth.

This has positioned China as one of the fastest-growing innovative economies globally, becoming the first nation to register over 4 million valid invention patents.

China also excels in maintaining its status as the leading country in the world for science and technology clusters, holding the top global ranking for two consecutive years with 26 clusters featured in the top 100.

Additionally, China continues to be the largest patent filer internationally, with a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percent in applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.

To support its innovation ecosystem, China has cultivated an environment conducive to substantial technological achievements.

This alignment of technological breakthroughs with industrial applications is facilitating new industrialization and providing a driving force for high-quality economic growth.

In the context of a new technological revolution and industrial transition, China is exploring collaborative models for win-win partnerships aimed at promoting global technology sharing.

Examples include the open-source initiatives from Chinese AI company DeepSeek and the commitment from BYD, a leader in new energy vehicles, which aims to share its core technologies across the industry.

On an international scale, China is fostering a network of collaborations, exemplified by the establishment of the China-Japan-ROK Innovation Cooperation Center and partnerships with Laos for an AI Innovation Cooperation Center.

Additionally, a cooperation agreement has been signed regarding the spaceflight of a Pakistani astronaut aboard China's space station, reflecting China's broader commitment to shared technological advancements.

The ZGC Forum also highlighted open-source projects, including the "Chang'an Chain" blockchain platform and the Halo OS from Li Auto, drawing significant global interest and reinforcing China's drive for an open and innovative ecosystem.

Daren Tang, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization, expressed a desire for enhanced collaboration with Zhongguancun, recognizing its role as a significant technology hub in China.

He emphasized the need for ongoing momentum in global development and prosperity.

As China seeks to enhance its technological self-reliance, it remains dedicated to international cooperation, striving to address global challenges and promote mutual progress.

By focusing on openness and collaboration, China aims to ensure the benefits of technological advancements are shared across the globe.
