Cultural Exchange Through Chinese Martial Arts: A Bridging Activity Between China and Spain

Spanish students engage in traditional Chinese martial arts practices, deepening cross-cultural ties and understanding.
Martial arts enthusiasts from China and Spain participated in a cultural exchange event at the Confucius Institute of the University of Granada on May 14, 2025. The session, led by Zhang Daojin, an inheritor of Six Harmony Praying Mantis boxing, showcased the rich cultural tapestry associated with Chinese Kung Fu.

Zhang's two-week program involved a series of lectures and training sessions aimed at sharing the significance of various Kung Fu styles, particularly Six Harmony Praying Mantis boxing, which originates from Shandong Province in east China.

During the training, Spanish students practiced martial arts techniques, including the foundational horse stance and various striking movements.

Alejandro Romero, a local instructor, has incorporated martial arts into his daily life since beginning training at 15. He noted that Chinese Kung Fu transcends physical fitness, emphasizing its cultural and philosophical depth.

This view aligns with the tenets of Six Harmony Praying Mantis boxing, known for its balance between strength and gentleness, reflecting traditional Chinese concepts of harmony between humanity and nature.

In addition to the specific martial arts techniques, Zhang introduced other practices such as Tai Chi and Qigong, which fostered discussions around wellness and the cultural richness of China.

Zhang expressed admiration for the Spanish students’ enthusiasm and dedication, noting that some students had previously traveled to Shandong Province to further their practice.

Alejandro Alvarez, a dedicated student of Zhang since 2009 and operator of a traditional Chinese medicine clinic in Granada, highlighted the transformative impact of Kung Fu on his life, contributing to his physical, spiritual, and mental well-being.

As interest in martial arts grows in Spain, there has been a notable increase in the number of enthusiasts traveling to China for advanced training, with several aspiring instructors establishing martial arts schools in Spain.

The enthusiasm for martial arts reflects a broader trend in Spain toward integrating physical fitness with mental health considerations.

Bu Shan, director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Granada, noted the establishment of over a hundred martial arts schools across Spain, with many practitioners undertaking annual trips to China for study.

She emphasized that martial arts serve as a conduit for fostering understanding and showcasing aspects of Chinese culture.

During key Chinese festivals, including the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, martial arts demonstrations have become significant cultural events, fostering connections between local populations and Chinese communities in Spain.

The Confucius Institute announced plans for an upcoming martial arts festival in Spain and intends to send a delegation to a competition in Shandong later this year.

Isabel María Balsas Ureña, the Spanish director of the institute, articulated that martial arts extend beyond mere physical execution; they encapsulate philosophical teachings such as respect and cooperation, which have universal resonance across diverse cultures.
