China's Economy Shows Positive Momentum Amid Global Challenges

Key sectors demonstrate resilience, innovation, and strategic growth as the nation focuses on sustainable development.
BEIJING, June 5 – China's economy is demonstrating a steady upward trajectory, bolstered by resilient domestic indicators and a robust start to 2025, according to officials from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Key sectors such as industrial production, services, domestic demand, and exports have shown notable growth.

In the first quarter of 2025, the country's GDP increased by 5.4 percent year on year, reflecting a strong economic foundation despite external pressures.

Ding Lin, an NDRC official, highlighted a 10 percent growth in the high-tech manufacturing sector in April, marking a significant outperformance compared to the overall industrial growth rate.

Areas such as drone technology, new energy vehicles (NEVs), artificial intelligence, and humanoid robotics are experiencing accelerated development, underscoring China's innovative capabilities.

In a related development, China's electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling sector is witnessing rapid expansion.

The Tianjin Battery Technology firm exemplifies the transition from waste to resource, focusing on revitalizing discarded EV batteries through advanced recycling techniques.

By the end of 2024, China's fleet of new energy vehicles reached 31.4 million, accounting for approximately 9 percent of the national automobile market.

This surge in EVs has created a parallel demand for sustainable recycling solutions as aging batteries reach the end of their lifecycle.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology mandates that EV manufacturers provide warranties on key components, including batteries, which has further stimulated consumer interest and the recycling market.

Market predictions estimate that retired power batteries will reach 1.04 million tonnes in 2025, potentially increasing to 3.5 million tonnes by 2030.

Moreover, companies like GEM and CATL are investing heavily in innovative recycling technologies.

GEM has implemented a digital lifecycle management system for accurate tracking of batteries, while CATL plans to expand its recycling operations in Europe, addressing both economic and environmental goals.

In another effort to stimulate growth, the Chinese government has launched a large-scale equipment renewal and consumer goods trade-in program aimed at enhancing domestic production capabilities and consumer spending.

The program has seen significant interest, with Jiangsu Tengsheng Textile Technology Group indicating that their new investment will lead to a marked increase in operational efficiency.

The People's Bank of China has also ramped up support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by expanding credit access and lowering financing costs.

By the end of April, the total amount of inclusive loans to micro and small enterprises reached 34.3 trillion yuan (about 4.77 trillion U.S. dollars), showing an 11.9 percent increase from the previous year.

In May, the logistics sector in China maintained its expansion, with the business climate index standing at 50.6. This indicates ongoing growth and resilience, driven by increasing domestic demand for logistics services.

The postal express sector experienced robust activity, and investments in logistics infrastructure continue to rise.

The government's initiatives reflect a focused strategy to stimulate consumer demand and stabilize the economy, encouraging investment in key sectors that promise to enhance China's position in both domestic and global markets.
