Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, April 1, 2025 – A group of American photographers visiting Hangzhou found themselves immersed in the vibrant local culture, as they engaged with Chinese children and explored significant historical sites.

The visit took place in the context of an ongoing effort to facilitate cultural exchanges between the United States and China, aiming to enhance mutual understanding.

On March 28, 2025, the group, captivated by the hospitality of the local community, made its way to the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts a history of over 5,000 years.

The photographers expressed their surprise at the children's eagerness to practice English and interact with them.

One photographer, Jerald Devin Braddock Jr., noted the warmth of the locals, commenting on the disparity between personal experiences and the salient narratives presented in the media.

The atmosphere during their visit was defined by exchanges of smiles and laughter, with children enthusiastically welcoming the guests.

In a moment described as both endearing and revealing, a local boy shouted, "Welcome to China!" as the minibus carrying the American tourists drove by, highlighting the open and friendly nature of the interactions.

Brian Alan Topolski, a 69-year-old photographer on his first international trip, reflected on his experiences, which included capturing candid moments of everyday life and engaging with local residents.

His interactions with sanitation workers and food delivery riders underscored a shared human desire for connection and understanding.

Topolski remarked on the importance of seeing a country through one’s own eyes rather than relying solely on external narratives.

The group also included Daniel Christian Cail and Jack Rush Kelly, two New Yorkers whose shared experiences during the trip deepened their friendship.

They expressed a sense of exhilaration and discovery, with Cail noting the remarkable beauty of China's landscapes and Kelly displaying a keen interest in learning about the culture and heritage of Beijing for a potential future visit.

Winston Zhou, president of the North America Photography Association, commented on the potential of such people-to-people exchanges to foster better understanding between Americans and Chinese.

He emphasized the need for more initiatives aimed at bridging cultural gaps.

As the American photographers engaged with the environment around them, they found themselves not just documenting a foreign land but partaking in a narrative that challenged preconceived notions of China, ultimately fostering a spirit of curiosity and connection.
