Zhuhai Checkpoints Witness Unprecedented Surge in Passenger Traffic in 2024

Record-breaking flow of travelers highlights the region’s growing interconnectivity and economic prospects under China’s Greater Bay Area initiative.
In a sign of increasing mobility and economic interconnectivity, the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai recorded an unprecedented 203 million inbound and outbound passenger trips in 2024 via its checkpoints leading to Macao and Hong Kong.

This marks a significant 22 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to official data released in Guangzhou.

The data encompasses the ports of Gongbei, Hengqin, Qingmao, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Among these, the Gongbei port, which serves as a crucial over-land crossing between Zhuhai in Guangdong Province and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), emerged as the busiest, handling approximately 110 million passenger movements in 2024 alone.

This milestone comes on the heels of Macao's recent celebration of the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland, marking a quarter-century since it, alongside neighboring Hong Kong, came under China's 'one country, two systems' principle.

This policy has allowed both SARs to retain their distinctive capitalist systems and lifestyles despite their integration into socialist China.

With aspirations to transform the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a globally competitive city cluster, China is striving to boost its economic dynamism through enhanced connectivity, technological innovation, and cultural exchange.

The Greater Bay Area includes Hong Kong, Macao, and nine cities in Guangdong Province, a region envisioned as a world-class destination for business, technology, and tourism.

The spike in transit numbers reflects a simplified customs clearance process that has facilitated movement across borders for both passengers and vehicles.

In 2024 alone, Zhuhai's border crossings recorded an all-time high of 11 million vehicle entries and exits.

Notably, vehicles traveling between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland constituted about 3.1 million of these movements, accounting for roughly 28% of the total traffic.

This enhanced mobility underscores the ongoing development and integration efforts within the Greater Bay Area, potentially setting the stage for further economic growth and cross-cultural exchange among the region’s diverse populations.
