Zhuhai Checkpoints Reach New Heights Amid Greater Bay Area Integration

Record 2024 Passenger Flow Highlights Growing Interconnectivity with Macao and Hong Kong
The bustling city of Zhuhai, a vital link between the Chinese mainland and the Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of Macao and Hong Kong, has reported a record-breaking 203 million inbound and outbound passenger trips for the year 2024. This marks a significant 22 percent increase compared to the previous year, as highlighted by official data released by the authorities.

The primary checkpoints facilitating this mass of movement include Gongbei, Hengqin, Qingmao, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Notably, the Gongbei port, a crucial land border connecting Zhuhai in Guangdong Province to the Macao SAR, emerged as the busiest crossing, with an astounding 110 million trips recorded over the year.

These developments coincide with Macao's recent celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of its return to China.

Both Macao and Hong Kong have been governed under the 'one country, two systems' model since the transition of sovereignty, allowing them to maintain their distinct legal and economic systems within the framework of the People's Republic of China.

This arrangement has been instrumental in fostering economic dynamism and cultural vibrancy in these SARs.

As part of its strategic vision, China is actively pursuing the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

This grand project aims to transform the region, which includes the SARs and nine cities from Guangdong Province, into a world-class city cluster.

The objectives of this ambitious agenda are multifaceted, targeting the establishment of a global hub for technology and innovation, a desirable place for business and living, a vibrant intercultural exchange center, and an attractive tourism destination.

In line with these goals, significant strides have been made in enhancing interconnectivity throughout the GBA.

This progress includes the simplification of customs clearance procedures, which has consequently stimulated a noticeable upsurge in the flow of passengers and vehicles across the ports adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao.

In 2024, Zhuhai's border inspection authorities documented a remarkable milestone in vehicular movement, with 11 million vehicle entries and exits—a record-breaking figure.

Noteworthy is the substantial share of these movements, around 3.1 million, involving vehicles traveling between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland, constituting approximately 28 percent of the total vehicular traffic.

These statistics not only underscore the growing connectivity and economic integration within the Greater Bay Area but also highlight Zhuhai's pivotal role as a bridge fostering increased mobility and opportunity across this economically vibrant region.
