Youth Engagement and Cross-Strait Integration Highlighted at the 17th Straits Forum

The forum in Xiamen gathers young participants from Taiwan and the mainland to celebrate cultural ties and economic opportunities.
XIAMEN, June 16 -- Recent developments in cross-Strait relations were underscored during the 17th Straits Forum, held in Xiamen, Fujian Province, with a focus on youth engagement and cultural integration.

The event gathered approximately 470 young attendees, primarily from Taiwan, emphasizing the theme "Youth Creates the Future." The forum featured a notable AI-generated music video that showcased themes of kinship and cultural commonality across the Taiwan Strait, glowing with the spirit of unity.

Chiang Kuo-ming, a young entrepreneur from Taiwan and founder of a film and cultural media company, played a vital role in the video’s creation.

He received a permit from Fujian Province to establish a radio and television program production presence, amid a wider initiative aimed at expanding investment opportunities for Taiwanese enterprises on the mainland.

"I really wanted to see what the short drama market is like on the mainland," Chiang stated, reflecting on his interest in bridging media connections between the regions.

Further demonstrating the cultural exchanges, the Minnan-dialect animated film "Chang An" recently premiered in Taipei, illustrating historical Chinese narratives, such as those surrounding the poet Li Bai.

The film sparked considerable interest, with attendees traveling from various locations in Taiwan to participate in viewings.

During the forum, participants recited Tang Dynasty poems, fostering a vigorous exchange of artistic tradition and cultural heritage.

Lee Yong-ping, head of a Taiwan-based cultural foundation, encouraged young Taiwanese to harness Chinese cultural legacies creatively, urging collaboration with their mainland counterparts.

Personal narratives were shared, with Chang Chun-kai recounting his journey to trace his family roots in Jinjiang, Fujian.

His experiences were documented in a collaborative series, highlighting the familial and cultural ties that bind the provinces.

Prominent political figures, including Wang Huning, emphasized the commitment to promoting high-quality development in cross-Strait relations, advocating for integrated cultural and economic initiatives.

Wang pledged to foster a favorable environment for Taiwan’s involvement in mainland development efforts.

He reiterated the importance of normalizing travel and exchanges between the regions.

The 17th Straits Forum featured an array of 56 exchange activities focusing on grass-root connections across youth, culture, and economy, drawing over 7,000 participants from Taiwan.

Former Kuomintang Chairman Ma Ying-jeou remarked on the shared aspirations for peaceful cross-Strait relations, highlighting the importance of cooperation amidst political challenges.

Despite previous impediments imposed by Taiwan's administration, the enthusiastic turnout at the forum reflects a persistent desire among the youth for cross-Strait dialogues and cultural exchanges, affirming a collective identity that emphasizes shared history and cultural ties.
