iPhone Air to Launch in China Next Week After eSIM Approval Clears Regulatory Hurdle

Apple confirms pre-orders begin Friday after Chinese telecoms gain clearance to trial eSIM services
Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the iPhone Air will be released in China next week, with pre-orders opening on Friday, following regulatory approval for commercial eSIM trials by the country’s major telecom providers.

The company has secured a critical pathway to introduce its newest model in the Chinese market, where previous eSIM restrictions had stalled its launch.

According to the announcement, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom—China’s three state-owned telecom operators—have been authorised to begin trial eSIM services for smartphones.

That move clears the regulatory blockade that had prevented the iPhone Air, which lacks a physical SIM tray and operates exclusively with embedded SIM technology, from entering China.

Cook, who is in Shanghai for his second trip to China this year, posted to Weibo that pre-orders would start on October 17 and general availability would follow shortly.

The iPhone Air will be the only Apple model in China supporting official eSIM carrier service, at least initially.

It is priced from 7,999 yuan (approximately US$1,122).

The timing is notable: the launch follows Apple’s recent unveiling of the iPhone 17 series, whose models still employ physical SIM slots in China.

The Air’s all eSIM architecture had complicated its entry into China, as Chinese carriers historically lacked full support for eSIM on smartphones.

To bridge that gap, Apple arranged a partnership whereby China Unicom will provide support for eSIM activation in China, including mandatory in-store identity verification to comply with national regulations.

Only the iPhone Air model A3518 is compatible with activation by China mainland carriers; devices bought abroad cannot adopt a local eSIM profile while in mainland China.

Industry observers see the move as a milestone in China’s telecommunications evolution.

With all three major carriers now cleared to offer trial eSIM services—pending further approvals and system integration—the shift may pave the way for broader adoption of embedded SIMs and signal the gradual phasing out of physical SIM cards across the Chinese market.

Apple’s renewed access to China coincides with Cook’s efforts during the visit to strengthen ties with local industry and creative sectors.

He met with the creator of Pop Mart’s Labubu art figures and the company’s CEO at an exhibition along the Bund in Shanghai, underscoring Apple’s cultural as well as commercial engagement during the trip.

As China’s eSIM infrastructure readies for expansion, the iPhone Air’s launch will test both user demand and network resilience in a market long steeped in physical SIM norms.
