Xinjiang's Secret to Nurturing Football Talent: A Grassroots Approach

How the integration of sports and education is turning the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region into a hotspot for football development.
In recent years, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of Northwest China has become a focal point for football enthusiasts, as a surge of emerging talents has caught national attention.

The concerted efforts to enhance grassroots-level football development have been pivotal in this transformation, with a special focus on integrating sports and education.

Xu Ming, chairman of the Xinjiang Football Association, attributes the success of Xinjiang's football players to not only their exceptional physical attributes but also a profound passion for the sport.

In an exclusive interview with the Global Times, Xu highlighted the contribution of synchronized training systems from the country's eastern regions, which have played a significant role in player development and inspired Xinjiang's youth.

"Football is intrinsically linked to education," Xu asserts, emphasizing the necessity of community-based initiatives to lay a strong foundation for the region's football future.

This approach is exemplified by pilot programs in Kashi and Yili, key cities in Xinjiang, aimed at integrating sports and educational training.

The advent of football academies at Xinjiang Normal University, Kashi University, and Yili Normal University marks a milestone in creating a sustainable talent pipeline.

These academies aim to provide comprehensive growth for youth players, teaching skills such as teamwork, resilience, and strategic problem-solving.

These attributes, according to Xu, are beneficial not only for aspiring professional players but also for any career path they choose to undertake after football.

Community involvement remains at the core of Xinjiang’s strategy.

Amateur football clubs can form alliances with local schools to offer regular training sessions and events, thereby fostering community engagement.

This community-based model not only aligns with global football development principles but also ensures that the game is deeply woven into the fabric of the region’s culture.

Moreover, Xinjiang has seen infrastructural advancements with the opening of a youth football training base in Kashi, supported by Shenzhen from South China's Guangdong Province.

Built with an investment of 100 million yuan ($13.76 million), this facility includes three FIFA Quality Pro certified pitches and hosts local youth training programs.

Xinjiang’s football rise extends to the national scene, exemplified by Behram Abduweli's pivotal goal against Indonesia, which secured China’s win in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Currently, 15 national players and numerous players in the Chinese Super League hail from Xinjiang, evidencing the region’s growing influence.

Football, alongside basketball and volleyball, forms a part of Xinjiang’s rich sporting culture.

A recent league comprising over 3,700 matches engaged 1.8 million participants, underlining the mass fitness movement's role in Xinjiang's social cohesion.

Zhai Wei, director of the Mass Sports Division, spoke of the league’s aim to become a hallmark event, championing the unity and perseverance sports instill in the community.

Thus, through its innovative blend of grassroots programs, educational integration, and community involvement, Xinjiang continues to contribute significantly to China's evolving football landscape.
