Tourism Flourishes in East China’s Wangxian Valley Amid Environmental Transformation

Wangxian Valley in Jiangxi Province attracts widespread visitor interest, driving local economic growth and revitalizing communities.
NANCHANG, May 26 — Wangxian Valley, situated in Jiangxi Province, has emerged as a prominent tourist destination following the transformation from a granite mining quarry to a local attraction.

The valley has been repurposed under a government initiative aimed at curbing disordered mining activities, leading to the development of cliffside hotels, skywalks, and waterfalls, enriching the area's natural beauty.

Guest experiences, such as breathtaking views from cliffside balconies, highlight the valley's appeal.

A visitor, identified only as Zhang, reflected on the experience as 'thrilling and romantic.'

The area has gained significant online attention, with the hashtag 'Wangxian Valley' amassing approximately 3.23 billion views on Douyin, a popular short-video platform in China.

According to recent statistics, the valley welcomed 615,800 visitors in the first quarter of 2025, yielding a revenue of 120 million yuan (approximately 16.71 million U.S. dollars).

The tourism surge has positively impacted local villagers, many of whom have opened shops and restaurants or taken up employment as wait staff and cleaners within the scenic area.

This successful transformation illustrates Jiangxi's strategic focus on leveraging its mountainous terrain, which comprises over 70 percent of the province's land.

Officials in Jiangxi emphasize that 'cliff-themed scenic spots not only provide unique experiences but also enhance cultural tourism.'

A similar revitalization has been observed in Huangling Village, where agricultural practices and traditional architectural styles attract tourists.

As many residents relocated to lower altitudes due to transportation challenges, the village was redeveloped into a scenic area featuring newly renovated cliffside homestays and terraced fields.

A local representative noted that during the spring bloom of rapeseed flowers, visitors perceive a 'window-to-scenery' experience, awakening amidst a landscape abundant with blossoms.

Further enhancing the tourist experience, cliff shuttle trains commenced operations in the Dajue Mountain Scenic Area in early 2025. With a third of its 11.8-kilometer route traversing cliffside, the train offers passengers panoramic views of canyons, forests, and blooming rhododendrons from a unique vantage point.

Since its launch, the cliff train service has recorded 184,700 passengers, including over 50,000 during the May Day holiday period in 2025.

The Chinese government continues to advocate for tourism that is attuned to local conditions, utilizing geographical diversity and cultural assets.

Data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism indicates that total domestic tourism expenditure reached 1.8 trillion yuan in the first quarter of 2025, with 1.79 billion domestic trips undertaken during this timeframe.
