Tianjin Port Sets Ambitious Expansion Plan for Container Throughput by 2035

Tianjin Port aims to increase annual capacity to 35 million TEUs, bolstering its position as a major trade hub.
Tianjin Port, located in North China's Tianjin Municipality, has unveiled a strategic plan to enhance its annual container throughput capacity to 35 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2035. This ambitious initiative marks a significant increase from the current throughput of 22 million TEUs projected for 2024. The expansion underscores Tianjin Port's aspiration to evolve into an international maritime hub and a pivotal coastal port within China's trade landscape.

The local authorities announced that the plan represents a shift from a "channel economy" towards a "port economy," integrating port operations with industrial and urban development.

This transition aims to improve Tianjin Port's capability to accommodate larger vessels, thereby reinforcing its essential role in global maritime trade.

Included in the expansion plan is a comprehensive upgrade of public infrastructure, highlighted by the construction of five new navigation channels, with the highest navigational grade designed for vessels of up to 300,000 tons.

Strategically situated along the Bohai Sea, Tianjin Port has established itself as a major shipping hub in North China, operating 145 container routes and facilitating trade with over 500 ports across more than 180 countries and regions.

The continued growth of Tianjin and other Chinese ports reflects the country's broader strategy of high-quality opening-up in the modern economic era.

In addition, other notable Chinese ports are embarking on similar expansion initiatives.

Authorities in Guangzhou have introduced the "One Port Pass" pilot plan to foster collaboration among ports within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Shandong Province is also leveraging marine resources to facilitate integrated reforms, with an eye on developing a world-class port group; projections suggest Shandong's port throughput could reach 2 billion tons by 2035, with container volumes exceeding 50 million TEUs.

Port operations serve as key economic indicators, showcasing China’s production and foreign trade robustness, and maintaining stability in the global supply chain.

In 2024, Tianjin Port reported cargo throughput of 493 million tons, marking a 3 percent increase from the previous year, alongside a container throughput record of 23.28 million TEUs, up 5 percent year-on-year.

Similarly, Qingdao Port in Shandong recorded cargo throughput of 712 million tons and container throughput of 30.87 million TEUs, reflecting year-on-year increases of 4.2 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively.

Shanghai Port retained its position as the world's busiest container port, handling 51.506 million TEUs in 2024.

China's maritime landscape is underscored by its ownership of eight of the world's top ten busiest ports in terms of cargo throughput, coupled with seven leading ports in container handling.

Ongoing efforts to enhance the specialization and smart transformation of terminals across Chinese ports are expected to further boost their service capabilities and efficiency.

Data from the Ministry of Transport indicates that from January to November 2024, China's total port cargo throughput reached 16.04 billion tons, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 3.4 percent, while container throughput reported 300 million TEUs, associated with a growth rate of 7.3 percent.
