The Rise of Mobile Cafés in China's Countryside

Rural revitalization sparks a trend in mobile cafés, attracting tourists and enhancing local economies.
In recent years, mobile cafés have gained significant traction in the countryside of China, coinciding with the ongoing rural revitalization efforts that have improved transportation, public facilities, and supporting services in these areas.

As scenic canola flower fields attract tourists, mobile café owners are seizing the opportunity to cater to visitors in picturesque locales.

Zhao Hongsheng, the owner of a mobile café in Mianxian County, Shaanxi province, has been operating his business for four years.

Utilizing a loudspeaker to promote his freshly ground coffee to tourists, Zhao's daily revenue hovers around 500 yuan (approximately $68.4), showing a decrease compared to previous years, partly attributed to increased competition despite a stable influx of visitors.

Zhao travels to various rural tourism hotspots, occasionally extending his reach to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to capitalize on seasonal tourism flows.

The first quarter of 2025 marked a notable milestone for rural tourism in China, with rural areas welcoming 707 million visits and generating 412 billion yuan in revenue.

These figures reflect year-on-year increases of 8.9 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively, as reported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Local officials, such as Zhang Ling from Mianxian County, are actively promoting events like canola flower festivals to boost tourism further.

Zhang highlighted that young people’s diverse consumer preferences create new business opportunities, allowing mobile cafés to thrive amid changing demands for casual and immersive experiences in nature.

With lower operational costs compared to urban cafés, mobile café operators like Zhao are able to offer more affordable beverages, providing a unique rural experience for city dwellers seeking respite from their fast-paced lives.

Another example is Zhou Hui and his wife, who transitioned from a decade of running a café in Chongqing to launching their mobile café after investing in a recreational vehicle (RV) in 2023. Their travels have already spanned approximately 50,000 kilometers, allowing them to experience seasonal changes and capture various sightseeing opportunities, including flowering festivals along their route.

Sales of RVs in China have seen substantial growth, with more than 14,000 units sold in 2023 alone, representing an increase of 22.41 percent compared to the previous year.

As of last October, the number of RVs in China had reached around 213,400 units.

Meanwhile, Li Shiyi from Guizhou province is also exploring the mobile café trend through his RV. Drawing inspiration from his rural upbringing, Li operates a green-painted mobile café, capturing the essence of youthful ambition embodied by the slogan “youth is priceless” displayed on his vehicle’s window.

The emergence of mobile cafés in the countryside of China illustrates a melding of entrepreneurship and leisure, reflecting changing societal trends as urban residents seek a connection to nature while enjoying accessible amenities.
