The Cinematic Journey of 'Ne Zha 2': A Cultural Milestone in Animation

The Cinematic Journey of 'Ne Zha 2': A Cultural Milestone in Animation

The documentary 'Bupobuli' chronicles the extensive five-year development of the highest-grossing non-Hollywood animated film, coinciding with its international release.
As the animated feature film 'Ne Zha 2' continues its success in the domestic market, it prepares for an international premiere in North America, Australia, and New Zealand starting this week.

The film, which has garnered over 9 billion yuan (approximately $1.23 billion) in domestic box office revenue, is poised to potentially reach earnings of 16 billion yuan, which could secure its place among the top five highest-grossing films worldwide.

The accompanying documentary 'Bupobuli' (meaning 'Breakthrough'), which runs for 45 minutes, has gained significant attention and insight into the five-year process that led to the creation of 'Ne Zha 2'.

Released on Monday, the documentary details the technical innovations and elaborate animation techniques that have positioned 'Ne Zha 2' as the highest-grossing non-Hollywood animated film to date.

Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan projects that 'Ne Zha 2' has the potential to further elevate its box office achievements, reinforcing its impact on global cinema markets.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun commented on the film's international screenings during a press conference, emphasizing the role of successful Chinese films in promoting cultural exchange.

He stated, "Chinese big hits are becoming new bridges for cultural exchanges between China and the world and a new window on China for the world." He highlighted the global desire for economic and cultural exchanges among nations as a driving force behind the film’s international reception.

Early reports indicated strong interest in North America, with occupancy rates reaching 90% for preview screenings, particularly noted at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre.

Despite this enthusiasm, analysts such as Xiao Fuqiu have noted challenges in China's overseas distribution capabilities, which remain less developed compared to Hollywood’s extensive networks.

The documentary 'Bupobuli' showcases the intricate technical challenges encountered during the production.

Notably, the rendering of a pivotal scene where a heavenly cauldron parts a five-kilometer ocean required over 200 hours per frame, utilizing advanced wave simulations.

Director Yang Yu, known as 'Jiaozi', mentioned that audience feedback from the first 'Ne Zha' film led to the decision to develop the character Shen Gongbao, expanding his narrative to include his family.

The storyboard designer, Xie Xiaobin, shared the demanding process of creating an intricate one-minute battle scene that took six months to conceptualize.

Jiaozi's emphasis on realism in character strength and abilities echoes throughout the film.

The character design incorporates historical elements, drawing from the ancient text 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' for inspiration.

Traditional music elements, including Dong ethnic group songs and various Chinese instruments, enhance the film's cultural depth.

The documentary reveals the collaborative effort behind the film, highlighting the dedication of animators from various studios across China who united in Chengdu for the project's production.

Huang Gong, the technical director, remarked that this collaboration felt akin to a national effort, stating, "Former CEOs became front-line animators - we all felt responsible for pushing Chinese animation forward."

Viewer reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the documentary's insights into the creative process and the dedication of the animators.

The narrative of 'Ne Zha 2' and its production team’s commitment to innovation reflects a broader ambition to redefine Chinese animated cinema on the global stage.
