Tangwu Town Transforms from Farming to Guitar Manufacturing Hub

Tangwu Town Transforms from Farming to Guitar Manufacturing Hub

Once primarily an agricultural community, Tangwu Town in East China's Shandong Province has evolved into a prominent center for electric guitar production, significantly contributing to local employment and the economy.
JINAN, Feb. 25 -- Li Qingsheng, 46, has balanced his roles as a farmer and an electric guitar tunner for the past 16 years in Tangwu Town, Changle County, Weifang, Shandong Province.

Each morning, Li works on his small plot of land, cultivating wheat, corn, and vegetables, before transitioning to his position at Changle Changyunda Musical Instrument Co., Ltd., the largest electric guitar manufacturer in the area.

Li's earnings, which can reach up to 9,000 yuan (approximately 1,255 U.S. dollars) per month, provide him with financial stability as he applies his skills in tuning, a process requiring acute sensory awareness.

The electric guitar production process in Tangwu is meticulous; it takes about one week to manufacture a single instrument, with significant manual craftsmanship involved.

This artisan approach has allowed local farmers, many of whom lack formal music education, to acquire proficiency in instrument making through hands-on experience.

Currently, Tangwu hosts 108 companies focused on musical instrument manufacturing, gaining recognition as "China's guitar town." Together, these businesses produce approximately 2 million electric guitars and 5 million accessory sets annually, resulting in over 1 billion yuan in revenue each year.

The growth of this industry has led to the engagement of more than 5,000 residents in musical instrument production, providing an essential income source for the town's population of 80,000.

The origins of Tangwu's musical instrument industry can be traced back to the early 1970s when efforts were made to diversify the local economy.

The establishment of a plant in 1972 marked the beginning of this transformation.

Following the policy changes after 1978, the industry received increased opportunities for development.

The founding of Shandong Muse Musical Instrument Co., Ltd. in 1993, a joint venture with South Korea, marked a significant milestone, facilitating training for workers who lacked experience in guitar manufacturing.

Zhang Jianjun, now the chairman of Changle Changyunda Musical Instrument Co., Ltd., exemplifies the industry’s development.

He transitioned to the manufacturing sector after over a decade in transportation, founding his company in 2012. His workforce has since expanded from fewer than 10 employees to over 130, with production figures approaching 200,000 electric guitars and revenue nearing 100 million yuan.

To support this burgeoning industry, Tangwu has invested in infrastructure enhancements.

The establishment of the Changle zone within the China (Weifang) cross-border electronic commerce experimental zone offers comprehensive services for customs, taxation, and logistics, easing the export of goods.

Local manufacturers report exporting around 20,000 guitars annually, benefiting from various government incentives including tax rebates and assistance in recruiting skilled labor.

Moreover, innovation and brand development have become focal points for the industry, with currently more than 40 local brands and 35 patents.

As a result, electric guitars produced in Tangwu are increasingly recognized in international markets, with sales extending to over 130 countries and regions.

Sang Haiqiang, the county head of Changle, emphasized the substantial advancements in production technologies and workforce skills over the past 50 years.

He noted the establishment of a comprehensive musical instrument industrial chain in Tangwu, solidifying the town's status in the global production landscape.
