Taiwan's DPP Criticized Over Delays in Resuming Cross-Strait Tourism

Taiwan's DPP Criticized Over Delays in Resuming Cross-Strait Tourism

Mainland Chinese authorities call for immediate action to reinstate tourism exchanges between the two sides.
BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, issued strong criticism on Wednesday regarding the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration in Taiwan for its role in hindering the restoration of cross-Strait tourism.

Zhu's comments were made during a regular press conference held in Beijing.

Zhu asserted that the DPP authorities have presented procedural justifications to postpone the reinstatement of tourism pathways, categorizing the DPP as the principal barrier rather than the lack of dialogue among tourism organizations.

Zhu highlighted recent applications from tourism operators in Fujian Province and Shanghai Municipality, which expressed intentions to visit Taiwan to conduct market research aimed at rejuvenating tourism for residents from those areas.

The DPP has maintained that matters related to tourism from the mainland to Taiwan should first be deliberated between the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association and the Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Straits, based in the mainland.

Zhu addressed the DPP's stance, indicating that while the mainland does not oppose such discussions, it advocates for immediate action to facilitate visits from tourism inspection groups should Taiwan indeed express its readiness to welcome mainland tourists.

Zhu further criticized the DPP for its refusal to grant entry permits to delegations from Shanghai who were invited to partake in the 2025 Taipei Lantern Festival, describing this refusal as an instance of political obstruction that undermines cultural interactions between the two sides.

In light of these developments, Zhu called on the DPP authorities to lift restrictions on cross-Strait exchanges and to undertake concrete measures that would enable mainland tourists to visit Taiwan.

This statement from the mainland comes amid ongoing tensions in cross-Strait relations, with tourism being a significant aspect of cultural and economic exchanges between Taiwan and the mainland.
