As of the end of 2024, Taiwan's population was recorded at approximately 23.4 million, marking a reduction of 20,222 people compared to the previous year.

This demographic downturn is primarily attributed to a significant drop in the number of newborns.

The birth figures for 2024 reached an unprecedented low of 134,856, the lowest since records have been maintained.

The crude birth rate corresponded to 5.76 per 1,000 people, a decrease of 715 births from 2023, continuing a nine-year trend of diminishing birth rates initially observed in 2016.

Moreover, the year 2024 saw an improvement in mortality rates, with the total number of deaths recorded at 202,107, reflecting a crude death rate of 8.63 per 1,000 people.

This figure signifies 3,261 fewer deaths than those reported in the preceding year.

Taiwan also experienced a decline in marital unions, as only 123,061 couples were married in 2024, a decrease of 2,131 couples compared to 2023. This decline in marriages can typically influence birth rates, further exacerbating demographic challenges.

A significant demographic shift is underway as the region approaches a super-aged society status.

The proportion of residents aged 65 and above now constitutes 19.18 percent of the total population.

This tipping point towards a super-aged society is defined by the elderly comprising 20 percent or more of the populace.

This demographic transition in Taiwan echoes trends seen in other developed regions struggling with low birth rates and aging populations, posing potential challenges for economic stability and policy planning related to healthcare and social services.
