Swift Restoration: Power Reinstated Amid Challenges in Quake-hit Xizang

State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co spearheads efforts to restore electricity to affected residents in the wake of a disastrous earthquake.
In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck the Xizang Autonomous Region, the State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co has successfully restored electricity to all temporary resettlement sites in Dingri County, ensuring crucial support to communities grappling with the quake's devastating impact.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck on a Tuesday morning, tragically claimed 126 lives and left 337 injured in its epicenter in Tsogo Township, Shigatse City.

Faced with immense challenges, the State Grid Xizang quickly mobilized resources and personnel to restore power in the earthquake-stricken area.

According to a company representative, the operation involved deploying over 900 emergency rescue personnel equipped with 112 power maintenance units, collectively providing a power generation capacity exceeding 20,000 kilowatts.

An additional 75,000 pieces of rescue equipment were urgently sent to the most affected areas, underscoring the scale and commitment of the undertaking.

One notable focus area has been the villages of Changkar and Thongley in Dramso Township, where teams from the State Grid Lhokha Power Supply Co braved harsh conditions—like high altitudes, cold weather, and sandstorms—to restore essential services.

The commitment of workers such as Wang Tianyou, whose efforts spanned from early morning until midnight despite experiencing hypoxia and other ailments, underscores the dedication of those on the ground.

Wang shared insights into the challenges faced during the operation, noting the relentless sandstorms and cold temperatures at high altitudes, which hampered the team's progress.

Nevertheless, their dedication has brought light and warmth back to affected families, restoring a semblance of normalcy amid the chaos.

Resettlement sites in Thongley were reconnected to the State Grid by Thursday afternoon.

For residents like Tashi, a 36-year-old villager, the restored electricity brought relief and gratitude.

Tashi recounted how the initial days after the earthquake were marked by the inconvenience of power shortages.

However, with electricity now available, essential tasks like charging mobile phones and accessing the internet have resumed, offering a lifeline in these trying times.

The devastating quake led to the collapse of over 3,600 houses, displacing approximately 47,500 people who now reside in 224 resettlement sites.

Despite the significant upheaval, the electricity restoration efforts have provided much-needed stability and hope.

The community has expressed gratitude for the support of the government and the swift response in restoring basic services.

As the most severe earthquake in the region in five years, the collaboration between State Grid Xizang and local authorities exemplifies a robust response to natural disasters, highlighting the importance of infrastructure resilience and timely intervention in mitigating the impacts of such events.
