Surge in Live Performances Fuels Cultural and Tourism Consumption in China

The post-COVID revival of live entertainment is driving significant economic growth in both the cultural and tourism sectors.
BEIJING, Feb. 21 — The revival of live performances in China has garnered notable enthusiasm among audiences and significant economic benefits for cultural and tourism sectors, reflecting a robust post-COVID recovery.

Li Xiaoxue, a Nanjing-based professional in her thirties, expressed her excitement after attending a hip-hop concert last December, describing the live atmosphere and direct engagement with artists as exhilarating.

Li participates in live shows approximately every two months, often traveling to nearby cities to support her favored singers and bands.

In recent years, live house performances, characterized by their intimate settings and audience interactions, have gained popularity among young Chinese audiences.

This growth has paralleled a broader resurgence in diverse cultural performances, including large-scale musical shows and modern theatrical productions.

Statistics from the China Association of Performing Arts revealed that in 2024, over 488,000 commercial performances were held, generating ticket revenues approaching 58 billion yuan (approximately 8 billion U.S. dollars).

The upward trend has continued into 2025, with nationwide ticket revenue reaching 481 million yuan within the first 17 days of January alone, according to data from online ticketing platform Beacon.

Analysts are observing a strong growth trajectory for the live performance sector, recognizing it as a fresh impetus for cultural and tourism consumption.

Supporting this viewpoint, Li celebrated her 30th birthday in June with a concert by pop icon Jay Chou in Changsha, where she also enjoyed local attractions and cuisine.

Her combined travel and concert expenses totaled around 3,000 yuan, underscoring the synergistic relationship between live events and tourism.

The Changsha concert alone drew over 130,000 attendees from outside the city, contributing 518 million yuan in tourism spending as reported by local tourism authorities.

A consultancy based in Guangzhou has projected that market value for China's performance sector could exceed 96 billion yuan by 2025 as interest in live entertainment continues to escalate.

To capitalize on the burgeoning performance economy, the State Council of China has introduced measures aimed at stimulating cultural and tourism consumption, emphasizing improvements to live events and entertainment.

Local governments have implemented various initiatives, including the reduction or elimination of venue rental fees and the distribution of consumption subsidies and coupons to encourage attendance.

An emerging variety of live performances, including talk and magic shows, has gained traction in both metropolitan and smaller cities, catering to increasing audience expectations for diverse entertainment experiences.

An official from a theater in Beijing's Xicheng District commented on the rapid growth of cultural consumption and the industry's evolution, noting a rich tapestry of artistic offerings intertwined with tourism.

However, challenges remain, as evidenced by complaints on social media regarding high ticket prices and unexplained event cancellations.

Responding to these concerns, Luo Zibai from the China Tourism Academy urged event organizers to enhance site capacity assessments and overall management practices.

Luo emphasized the importance of live performances as a reflection of popular culture, noting that while these events may be transient, the pursuit of aesthetic and leisure experiences persists in society.
