Singaporean Embassy in Beijing Hosts New Year Reception to Fortify Bilateral Ties

Event Celebrates Cultural Heritage and Diplomatic Relations with New Year Greetings to Singaporeans in China
In a spirited celebration that underscored the strengthening ties between Singapore and China, the Embassy of Singapore in Beijing organized a New Year reception on January 7. The event, attended by over 200 Singaporeans residing in China, was not only a celebration of the Gregorian New Year but also an anticipatory homage to the upcoming Chinese New Year.

The reception was graced by the presence of Peter Tan Hai Chuan, the Singaporean Ambassador to China, who extended heartfelt New Year greetings to his compatriots.

The event was marked by a vibrant display of camaraderie and goodwill, as attendees indulged in traditional festivities symbolizing prosperity and renewal.

Among the highlights was the traditional practice of _Lohei_, also known as _yee sang_ or 'prosperity toss,' a raw fish salad emblematic of the Lunar New Year's celebrations among Chinese communities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

This tradition holds significant cultural value for Singaporean Chinese people, representing a call for prosperity in the coming year.

Joining Ambassador Tan were Singapore’s consuls general from various Chinese cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xiamen.

Their presence at the function was a testament to the collective commitment to maintaining and furthering the bonds between Singaporeans living in China and their homeland.

The consuls general offered their own well-wishes, reinforcing the theme of unity and shared heritage.

The reception also served as a platform to showcase Singapore's cultural heritage within China, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of the shared traditions between the two nations.

It is events like these that continue to foster a robust non-governmental diplomacy, enhancing people-to-people connections and mutual respect.

As Singapore and China continue to consolidate their bilateral relationship, the New Year reception exemplifies the harmonious interplay of cultural exchange and diplomatic goodwill, benefiting the citizens and strengthening the ties across their respective communities.
