Shipping Rates Between China and the US Decline Amid Improved Capacity

Freight rates fall as shipping capacity increases, but high tariffs continue to impact bilateral trade.
Shipping rates for container freight from China to the United States have been decreasing following their peak in May, attributed to improvements in shipping capacity.

As of Monday, the freight rate for shipping a standard container from Qingdao, located in Shandong Province, to Los Angeles is reported to be around $3,100, a significant drop from approximately $6,000 at the time of the Geneva trade talks earlier this year.

These discussions resulted in an agreement to reduce reciprocal tariffs, prompting a surge in orders from US buyers and increased exports from China.

A shipping agent from Shenzhen noted that since the conclusion of the Geneva talks, there has been a notable rise in bookings for shipments to the US. However, the agent explained that it takes time for shipping companies to mobilize their container ships to meet the increased demand at ports.

The recovery in shipping capacity at Chinese ports has now become evident.

Danish shipping giant Maersk indicated in a recent advisory that shipping volumes from China to the US are on the rise following the tariff adjustments made on May 12. A shipping agent based in Ningbo stated that while the recovery of shipping capacity has stabilized, the demand from exporters for containers is gradually subsiding, which is reflected in the declining shipping rates.

Despite these developments, the impact of the US tariffs on Chinese goods remains significant.

High tariff rates continue to inhibit US importers' willingness to place orders due to concerns surrounding consumer demand.

Recent customs data highlighted an 8.1 percent year-on-year decline in trade value between the two nations, amounting to 1.72 trillion yuan ($239 billion) in the first five months of 2025.

The implications of these tariffs extend to US ports, with officials at the Port of Los Angeles reporting a 9 percent decrease in imports in May compared to the previous year.

This port, which is the primary entry point for seaborne goods from China, recorded a handling of 355,950 twenty-foot equivalent containers in May, marking the lowest monthly volume observed in over two years.

Port authorities indicated that the existing high tariffs are causing importers to either cancel or delay shipments.

Experts have called for a reassessment of the current tariff landscape, noting that these tariffs obstruct the flow of numerous goods.

A professor from Xiamen University emphasized the importance of the US reducing tariffs to facilitate mutually beneficial trade, pointing out that current levels of trade between China and the US are still not reflective of a normal state amid ongoing uncertainties regarding US tariff policies.

Last week, the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism occurred in London, where representatives from both countries engaged in extensive discussions on economic and trade issues of mutual interest.

The meeting reportedly achieved progress in addressing various economic and trade concerns.
