In the wake of a significant seismic event, the southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region of China has reported an extensive series of aftershocks, totaling 3,614 as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

This follows the initial 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County last week, as documented by the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The majority of the aftershocks detected have been minor, registering below 3.0 on the Richter scale.

However, on Monday night, the region experienced two of the stronger tremors, with magnitudes of 4.9 and 5.0. Despite their strength, these aftershocks caused damage to some structures but did not result in casualties, thanks in large part to preemptive safety measures.

Local authorities report that residents had been relocated to temporary accommodations such as tents and prefabricated houses, which were constructed in anticipation of potential seismic activity.

'As residents had earlier moved to tents and prefab houses, no casualties have been reported so far,' stated Tashi Dondrup, the head of Dingri County.

The original earthquake, which occurred on January 7, tragically resulted in the loss of 126 lives and caused considerable destruction.

Dingri County, strategically significant for housing the northern base camp of Mount Qomolangma, commonly known globally as Mount Everest, has a long history of seismic events.

This has spurred both national and local authorities to implement robust disaster response and preparedness strategies.
