Rising Popularity of Electric Vehicle Taxis in Myanmar Amidst Heatwave

As temperatures soar in Myanmar, electric vehicle taxis are becoming a favored transport option, providing comfort and efficiency for both drivers and passengers.
YANGON, March 27, 2025 — As Myanmar experiences an escalating hot season, with temperatures frequently reaching around 40 degrees Celsius, the demand for air-conditioned and comfortable modes of transportation is increasing.

Electric vehicle (EV) taxis are emerging as a popular choice among residents seeking alternatives to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

The growth of EV taxis in Myanmar can be attributed to their efficient air conditioning capabilities and lower operating costs, making them an appealing option for both passengers and drivers.

In contrast to traditional taxis, EVs provide a quieter, cooler, and smoother ride, which is particularly desirable during the extreme heat.

Ko Aung Myo Oo, a 55-year-old taxi driver, transitioned to an electric vehicle five months ago.

He operates a Chinese-made Dongfeng EV on a daily route spanning 118 kilometers between Yangon and Pyapon.

He noted a marked improvement in his driving experience.

"EVs are much more comfortable than fuel-powered cars, and the air conditioning works well.

Plus, I don't have to worry about rising fuel prices," he stated.

The surge in fuel prices in Myanmar has made EVs a cost-effective solution for many drivers.

Encouraged by friends, Ko Aung Myo Oo has shared positive insights about his experience with others.

Similarly, Pyae Phyo Aung, a 41-year-old who drives a 309-kilometer route between Yangon and Mawlamyine in a Dongfeng EV, expressed his satisfaction with the switch, emphasizing the enhanced comfort and smoothness of the ride.

Passengers are also recognizing the benefits of EV taxis.

Unlike traditional taxis where air conditioning may be turned off to conserve fuel, EV taxis maintain a comfortable climate throughout the journey.

Sit Pyae Nyein, a 40-year-old from Pyapon, stated that he has opted for EV taxis exclusively, citing their cleanliness, comfort, and environmental benefits as key factors in his choice.

Furthermore, Ma Phyu Aung, 28, remarked on the value of the EVs despite some fare increases, highlighting their eco-friendliness and overall comfort.

The city of Yangon, known for its bustling atmosphere, has noted a consistent rise in EV taxi services, contributing to reduced traffic noise and creating a more environmentally friendly urban commute.

Ko Yan Paing, a 38-year-old driver with six months of experience in a Chinese MG EV, described the distinct advantages of EVs compared to previous vehicles he operated.

As demand for EVs escalates, rental services have expanded significantly, with availability noted in various towns and cities including Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Kyaikhto, Pathein, Chaungtha, and Ngwe Saung.

Aung Myat Thu, an official from an EV rental group based in Yangon, reported a growth in their fleet from five vehicles to approximately 50 within two years, attributing increased passenger interest to growing awareness of EVs.

Daw Myat Mon Thein, a deputy general manager from the Ministry of Industry, indicated that the adaptation of electric vehicles in Myanmar is anticipated to progress as the government facilitates more imports.

Currently, it is reported that nearly all electric vehicles in the country are imported from China, contributing to the overall rise in EV usage.

Presently, Myanmar has over 8,000 electric vehicles, including four electric buses, with infrastructure supporting 334 charging stations across 136 locations, excluding private charging facilities.
