Revitalization of the Jingxi Ancient Road: A Cultural Renaissance in Beijing

Moshikou block transformed into a vibrant hub of heritage and modernity, attracting millions of visitors.
The Moshikou block, a historically significant section of the Jingxi Ancient Road, also known as the "Ancient Road of Camel Bells," has undergone substantial renovations aimed at revitalizing its cultural heritage and enhancing local livelihoods.

Once perceived as desolate, Moshikou is now recognized as the "Moshikou Historical and Cultural Block," after being designated a national-level tourism and leisure site by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in March.

In 2024, the block has drawn over 6 million visitors.

Zhang Hao, manager of the planning and design department at the Moshikou renovation division, emphasized the approach of small-scale renovations, utilizing existing structures and cultural heritage instead of large-scale demolition.

Renovations have introduced leisure spaces and scenic spots for photography, integrating modern design with traditional cultural features.

A recent meeting held in Hebei Province focused on the cultural heritage along the Jingxi Ancient Road, highlighting the significance of preserving its historical legacy while exploring new methods to leverage its cultural resources.

Proposed projects include hiking tours and historical experience visits, aimed at revitalizing the ancient path.

Wang Chunhe, president of the Beijing Jingxi Ancient Road cultural development association, noted that the preservation of the road’s historical and cultural heritage is essential for active utilization and continuous innovation.

The Jingxi Ancient Road served multiple purposes throughout history, functioning as a network of interconnected routes involved in ethnic integration, military defense, trade, and urban supply, with roots tracing back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220).

The ancient road has significantly influenced the cultural fabric of the Beijing region, fostering social interactions and cultural exchanges throughout history.

Its appeal lies in its rich humanistic heritage, historical significance, and intangible cultural assets, which resonate emotionally with visitors.

As part of this revitalization initiative, Moshikou has introduced modern amenities, including leisure spaces, bookstores, and art installations that preserve the historical essence while attracting contemporary audiences.

A previously private courtyard is now a public exhibition hall showcasing the village's history as the first in Beijing to receive electricity in the 1920s.

The renovation efforts in Moshikou are still ongoing, with future plans focused on meeting the needs of local residents, business operators, and tourists.

The aim is to harmoniously blend cultural and commercial functions that honor the past while promoting unique development.

In Beijing's Mentougou district, 38 sections of the Jingxi Ancient Road are preserved, totaling approximately 684 kilometers in length.

The site retains evidence of its historical use through deep hoof prints left by donkey and mule caravans, some reaching depths of over 10 centimeters.

These prints signify the road's prosperous past as a vital trade route.

To further promote the cultural heritage of the Jingxi Ancient Road, Shuiyuzui village has launched the "Jingxi Shuiyuzui Cloud Villager" mini program on WeChat.

This initiative allows users to explore the ancient road virtually, participate in exhibitions, and 'adopt' hoof prints digitally.

Available in multiple languages, the program engages both local and international participants.

Chen Chuang, the village's Party secretary, noted that users could engage in virtual activities that enhance their status within the program, offering rewards including discounted tickets and support for entrepreneurial initiatives in the village.

Top-tier users are entitled to honorary villager status, providing them with lifetime access to scenic areas and opportunities for local entrepreneurship, which aims to attract youth and infuse new life into the community.

The continuous innovation and active utilization of the Jingxi Ancient Road's cultural legacy underscores its significance in the present day.
