New Genetic Study Reveals Ancient Ancestry of Populations in Southwest China

Ancient genomes from Yunnan Province illuminate connections to Tibetan and Austroasiatic origins.
Recent advancements in genetic research have significantly enhanced understanding of the prehistoric human populations in Southwest China, specifically in Yunnan Province.

A study published in the journal Science presents findings from a research team led by Fu Qiaomei at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The research indicates that the region is pivotal for tracing the ancestry of both Tibetan and Austroasiatic groups.

The study involved the analysis of genomes from 127 ancient individuals, with genetic material dating back as far as 7,100 to 1,400 years ago.

Notably, the genome of a 7,100-year-old individual from Yunnan displayed genetic distinctions from contemporary East Asians, correlating it more closely with a 40,000-year-old individual from the Beijing area.

This has led to the identification of a previously unrecognized ancestral lineage termed 'Xingyi ancestry,' which underscores the significant genetic divergence among human populations in East Asia.

The analysis revealed that, although genetically different from current East Asians, the ancestral makeup of the Yunnan individual shares affinities with populations indigenous to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

These findings support earlier research suggesting that the genetic profile of plateau inhabitants is markedly distinct from other modern populations.

This genomic evidence has critical implications for understanding the history of Tibetan populations.

The examination indicates that a prehistoric Asian population, which diverged from other populations at least 40,000 years ago, continued to inhabit Southwestern China into the Holocene.

Additionally, interactions between these individuals and migrants from northern East Asia contributed to the formation of the Tibetan population.

The Xingyi ancestry was also evident in an 11,000-year-old individual from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, although it diminished in subsequent populations within that territory.

Further genome-wide analyses of DNA from populations in central Yunnan, dated from 5,100 to 1,400 years ago, revealed a closely related yet genetically distinct ancestry compared to other East Asian groups in northern and southern China, having diverged from these groups approximately 19,000 years ago.

Interestingly, the Yunnan DNA samples are closely aligned with present-day Austroasiatic speakers, who are found throughout Southeast Asia, parts of South Asia, and southern China.

While some scholars have proposed that the dispersal of Austroasiatic speakers was linked to agricultural expansion in this area, the presence of related populations in central Yunnan predates the introduction of farming.

The study provides the earliest evidence of ancestry connected to Austroasiatic speakers, highlighting a continuous lineage extending from 5,100 to 1,400 years ago.

The exploration of central Yunnan and the adjacent Red River Valley is posited as vital for further revelations regarding Austroasiatic prehistory.

The research also elaborates on the demographic history of populations residing in western and southeastern Yunnan, indicating that groups in these areas were influenced by distinct northern East Asian ancestries.

Overall, the findings underscore Southwest China as a crucial nexus for understanding prehistoric human migrations and interactions.

By examining the ancient genomes preserved in Yunnan, the study reveals a profound genetic diversity that elucidates the region's rich ethnic and linguistic tapestry, while also contributing to broader insights into human dynamics across a much larger geographic expanse, from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau to Southeast Asia.

The comprehensive nature of this research illuminates long-held questions regarding the origins and expansion of East Asian populations, offering novel perspectives on ancient human migration patterns.
