Liu Cixin Heralds a New Era for Chinese Science Fiction at Beijing Forum

Acclaimed author Liu Cixin emphasizes the global potential and cultural significance of science fiction during a prominent gathering in Beijing.
In a keynote address at the eighth annual meeting of the Science Fiction Creation and Research Base, part of the China Science Writers Association, renowned Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin articulated his vision for the genre's future, stating that the current era of rapid technological advancement is only the beginning for science fiction.

Speaking on March 29, 2025, in Beijing, Liu addressed an audience of over 70 distinguished guests from various fields, including popular science, literature, education, and the science fiction industry.

Liu noted the concerns surrounding the prophetic power of science fiction in an age dominated by technological innovation, asserting, "True sci-fi is only beginning." He positioned the genre not merely as a predictive tool but as a beacon illuminating uncharted territories, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence and genetic research.

He argued that the themes of science fiction resonate universally, transcending cultural and national boundaries, and emphasized its role in connecting diverse peoples through shared human experiences.

As the president of the Beijing Yuanyu Science Fiction and Future Technology Research Institute, Liu highlighted the institute's efforts since its founding in 2016 to foster creativity and collaboration among authors.

The Science Fiction Creation and Research Base aims to build international platforms and support theoretical research, contributing to the growth of Chinese science fiction while nurturing emerging writers through studios and seminars.

During the event, Wang Weiying, the base's executive deputy director, presented an overview of the achievements from 2024 and outlined the strategic plan for 2025. She identified collaborative book projects, advancements in commercialization of sci-fi works, educational initiatives, talent development, and academic exchanges as focal points for the forthcoming year.

Wang described science fiction as a reflection of humanity's collective aspirations, stressing its importance as a catalyst for progress and innovation in the contemporary landscape.

The forum also included discussions on the use of science fiction in educational contexts to enhance scientific literacy, alongside exploring the rising "Sci-Fi+" movement, which integrates traditional storytelling with futuristic themes.

Notably, the base introduced new publications and established additional writer studios, increasing the total to 18, signifying a continued investment in the creative community.

Noted author Qiu Huadong, who serves as vice chairman of the China Writers Association, reiterated the pivotal role that Chinese sci-fi creators have in this transformative period.

He encouraged the next generation of writers to draw from scientific progress and historical narratives while delving into the complexities of human nature.

Qiu asserted that through innovative storytelling, Chinese science fiction could achieve significant global relevance, balancing cultural authenticity with universal themes.
