Indonesia Joins BRICS: A Boost for Indonesia, the Region, and the World

Foreign Minister Sugiono highlights the positive implications of Indonesia's membership in the economic bloc.
Jakarta, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — In a historic move, Indonesia has been welcomed as a full member of BRICS, an economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Announced by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry earlier this week, this expansion marks the first enlargement of the group since South Africa's inclusion in 2010. While Brazil currently holds the rotating presidency for 2025, it is the strategic addition of Indonesia that has captivated global attention.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, in a press statement delivered on Friday, expressed that Indonesia's membership promises positive ramifications not only for the nation itself but for the regional and global community at large.

"This decision is not the result of overnight work but rather the outcome of Indonesia's diplomatic efforts, consistency, and determination," stated Sugiono, reflecting on Indonesia's long-standing foreign policy of 'free and active' engagement within the global order.

With Indonesia's entry into BRICS, the group now consists of 10 nations, extending its reach further within the Asia-Pacific region.

Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's role in acting as a diplomatic bridge for developing nations in the area.

In particular, Indonesia seeks to leverage its new position to help alleviate geo-economic and geopolitical tensions, supporting its vision of a harmonious and cooperative international community.

Beyond the immediate benefits for Indonesia, the inclusion holds broader implications for BRICS as a bloc, underlining its evolving influence in global affairs.

While traditionally formed as a response to Western-dominated economic structures, BRICS has sought to foster alternative economic cooperation and political dialogue platforms.

Indonesia's commitment to the group comes at a time when many developing countries are pursuing greater representation and a louder voice in international forums.

This move aligns perfectly with BRICS' mission to provide a collective conduit for the priorities and needs of emerging economies.

By participating actively, Indonesia may also see enhanced opportunities for investment, trade, and collaborative projects, especially in key areas such as infrastructure and sustainable development.

As BRICS continues to grow and evolve, Indonesia's contributions may well shape the future direction of this influential assembly, strengthening the cooperative fabric of these diverse but interconnected economies.

While the journey as a new BRICS member begins, Indonesia stands poised to bring new perspectives and vigor to the collective endeavors of this dynamic group.
