In a bid to strengthen cultural and tourism ties, China’s Hubei province showcased its rich heritage and vibrant culture on New Zealand’s South Island.

The event took place in Christchurch, marking a significant cultural exchange between the two regions.

At the center of this promotion was a celebration of the historic connection between Hubei and Canterbury, underscored by the legacy of Rewi Alley.

Rewi Alley, a revered figure in the annals of China-New Zealand relations, spent much of his life fostering cultural understanding between the two countries.

Originally from Canterbury, Alley dedicated six decades to working and living in China, with significant years spent in Hubei.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Consul General in Christchurch, He Ying, highlighted Alley's enduring influence, describing the event as a symbolic reunion of old friends.

He Ying emphasized Hubei's strategic importance and cultural richness.

Located along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, Hubei is recognized not only for its profound historical and cultural significance but also as a hub of economic, transportation, cultural, and educational activities in China.

The promotional event in Christchurch showcased Hubei's unique offerings, including a tea art demonstration, captivating photo exhibitions, and vibrant art performances aimed at broadening the New Zealand public’s understanding of the province’s unique charm.

These activities emphasized Hubei’s role in fostering tourism and cultural exchanges between the two regions.

Li Shuyong, Culture and Tourism Director of the Hubei Provincial Department, expressed his hopes to present a dynamic and enchanting image of Hubei to New Zealand audiences.

Such initiatives, he believes, will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cultural understanding between Hubei and New Zealand.
