Formula One's Strong Commitment to China's Racing Future

Formula One's Strong Commitment to China's Racing Future

The CEO of Formula One emphasizes China's pivotal role in the sport's evolving global landscape, backed by strong fan engagement and forward-looking strategies.
Stefano Domenicali, the president and CEO of Formula One, has underscored the significance of Shanghai as a vital component of the sport's future, reflecting China's growing importance in Formula One's global strategy.

The Chinese Grand Prix, which began in 2004 at the Shanghai International Circuit, secured a five-year contract extension in December 2022, ensuring its presence on the F1 calendar through 2030.

Following a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 2024 race drew approximately 200,000 fans, highlighting a resurgence of interest in the sport.

As the second race of the 2024 season, the event is nearing sell-out status.

Domenicali expressed optimism, stating, "This event has the potential to be two to three times bigger than what it is now," pointing to the rapid growth of Formula One's fanbase in China, which has reached over 200 million, with a notable proportion being young, affluent, and educated, including 50% female viewers.

The 2025 season will see the continuation of the Sprint race format in Shanghai, with Domenicali noting that feedback from the inaugural Sprint race was overwhelmingly positive.

This initiative aims to maintain a high level of excitement for fans, aligned with F1's broader strategy to strengthen its connection with Chinese audiences.

Statistics reveal a 35 percent surge in television viewership in 2024, with over 100 million unique viewers in China.

Additionally, social media engagement has grown significantly, with over 4.3 million followers across various Chinese platforms.

Promoting diversity is central to Formula One's localization efforts, notably through initiatives like the all-female F1 Academy, which will hold its season opener in Shanghai in 2025. Shi Wei is poised to be the first Chinese racer to compete in the Academy, a move that Domenicali describes as fostering 'incredible momentum' for inspiring young women in motorsports.

He remarked on the importance of diversity across all aspects of the sport, encompassing not just drivers but engineers, mechanics, and management.

Domenicali emphasized the need to engage with younger audiences by utilizing appropriate content and platforms, stating, "China is very big.

We need to develop a strategy starting from the beginning." He reaffirmed the importance of leveraging local social media channels to maintain growth in this key market.

The inclusion of Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu as a reserve driver for Ferrari has further bolstered Formula One's commercial prospects in China.

Domenicali praised Zhou as a significant ambassador for the sport, noting the importance of his Chinese heritage in expanding F1's footprint in the region.

Zhou's performances have drawn attention, particularly during his home debut in Shanghai, which signals a broader recognition of China's influence on the sport.

While expressing hope for new Chinese talents to emerge, Domenicali emphasized that the quality of drivers remains paramount.

He articulated confidence that continued investment in grassroots initiatives and platforms such as the F1 Academy will nurture the development of Chinese motorsports talent in the coming years.
