China and Japan Advance Technical Talks on Aquatic Product Safety

China and Japan Advance Technical Talks on Aquatic Product Safety

Beijing discussions reflect ongoing cooperation between China and Japan in trade and investment.
On May 30, 2025, China and Japan convened a new round of technical discussions in Beijing regarding the safety of Japanese aquatic products, culminating in what was described as 'substantive progress' by officials from China's General Administration of Customs.

This round of talks, initiated at Japan's request, contributes to a series of technical dialogues that have been ongoing this year, highlighting a collaborative approach to ensure safety standards and trade facilitation.

In a separate announcement, data from China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange indicated that the country’s external portfolio investment assets, excluding reserve assets, reached 1.42 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of 2024. The breakdown showed that 859.8 billion dollars were invested in equities, while bonds accounted for 557.5 billion dollars.

The report further detailed that non-bank financial institutions held the majority of these assets, amounting to 795.5 billion dollars, making up 56 percent of the total.

Additionally, a spokesperson from China's foreign ministry pointed to the recent affirmations of credit ratings for Hong Kong by major global rating agencies, including Fitch, S&P, and Moody's, all maintaining stable outlooks.

This reaffirmation was interpreted as a testament to Hong Kong's economic resilience and standing as an international financial hub, bolstered by fostering connections with global investors.

On the trade front, an emerging optimism was evident among industry leaders during the Global Britain Trade Expo 2025 held in London.

Key figures from various sectors discussed the ongoing evolution of trade relations between Britain and China amid global uncertainties.

Marco Forgione, director general of the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, pointed out significant potential still persists in bilateral trade, particularly in future industries such as electric vehicles.

Other industry representatives noted an increase in British companies entering the Chinese market, navigating distribution through China's robust e-commerce platforms.

In response to ongoing international trade tensions, China’s commerce ministry urged the United States to stop imposing unilateral additional tariffs, noting a recent ruling by a U.S. court that deemed certain tariffs illegal.

The ministry emphasized the detrimental effects of tariffs, arguing they have disrupted international trade dynamics without resolving underlying economic issues.

Moving to the Asia-Pacific region, China and Sri Lanka signed new cooperation agreements during the 8th meeting of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Trade and Economic Commission.

The meeting concluded with the signing of two memorandums, focused on trade facilitation and industrial cooperation, reflecting both nations' commitment to furthering economic cooperation.

Moreover, China has expanded its visa-free policy for citizens from several Latin American countries, including Peru and Chile.

Starting June 1, 2025, travelers from these nations will be able to enter China without a visa for up to 30 days, aimed at fostering business exchanges and tourism.

Proponents of the policy in both China and Latin America believe it will significantly enhance trade cooperation, having already observed a doubling of trade over the past decade, reaching 518.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. This move aligns with China’s broader strategy of tightening economic ties with Latin America by easing travel restrictions, paving the way for deeper bilateral investment and corporate partnerships.
