Discovery of the World's Smallest Sauropod Dinosaur Tracks in China's Xizang Region

A significant paleontological find reveals insights into dinosaur distribution near the ancient Tethys Ocean
In a landmark discovery, scientists have unearthed the world's smallest sauropod dinosaur tracks in Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

This discovery, announced by Xing Lida, a notable dinosaur expert from the China University of Geosciences, offers valuable insights into the distribution of saurischian dinosaurs in the area adjacent to the ancient eastern Tethys Ocean.

The expedition led to the identification of two tracksites, the most intriguing of which includes small and isolated footprints identified as cf.

Parabrontopodus isp.

Ranging from 8.8 cm to 15.5 cm in length, these tracks are credited to at least six distinct dinosaurs, potentially reaching lengths of 2-3 meters when alive.

According to Xing, these diminutive tracks are rare, comparable in size to the smallest sauropod tracks previously recorded.

Previously recorded Cretaceous deposits in South Korea featured tracks of 12.2 cm, while the early Cretaceous deposits in North China's Inner Mongolia presented footprints measuring between 11.5 to 13 cm.

This new finding from Xizang not only establishes a new minimum for sauropod track size but also accentuates the historical significance of the region.

Furthermore, Xing posits that this fossil evidence corroborates earlier hypotheses which suggested that dinosaurs from the Middle Jurassic era within Southwest China's eastern regions, part of the ancient maritime Tethys Ocean, predominantly consisted of saurischian dinosaurs.

The second tracksite uncovered by the team comprises footprints from early sauropods and theropods.

This includes a distinctive trackway of three consecutive large theropod footprints, each approximately 42 cm in length.

Morphological analysis classifies these tracks within the Eubrontidae family.

Xing elaborated that while Eubrontidae tracks are commonplace within China's Mesozoic fossil records, they are relatively rare in the Jurassic records of Xizang.

The presence of these tracks implies the former existence of moderate-sized theropod dinosaurs in the region, potentially measuring up to 6 meters in length.

These dinosaur fossils were excavated from the Middle Jurassic Dongdaqiao Formation, which dates back roughly 166 to 170 million years.

This formation is also rich in plant fossils, trace fossils, and a limited number of marine fossils, such as brachiopods, ostracods, and crinoid stems, indicative of a diverse marine-terrestrial ecosystem.

Xing emphasized that the favorable environmental conditions and abundant water resources in the area during this period were likely major attractors for dinosaurs, resulting in the substantial fossil record.

As research continues, the findings from the Xizang region are poised to contribute significantly to scientific research and public education on dinosaurs.
