Cultural and Natural Heritage Day Celebrated Across China

Events and initiatives emphasize cultural heritage preservation and innovation in Changsha and beyond.
CHANGSHA, June 14 — Central China's Hunan Province hosted a series of prominent events to commemorate this year's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day.

The celebrations, under the theme of cultural heritage revival, began on Saturday with an opening ceremony showcasing exemplary preservation cases and recognizing outstanding public awareness projects for the coming year.

The event featured a dedicated forum on scientific and technological innovation in cultural heritage preservation and included an online exhibition focused on fine arts heritage.

Following the inaugural activities in Changsha, more than 7,000 related events are expected to take place nationwide, organized by cultural heritage departments and institutions in collaboration with China's National Cultural Heritage Administration.

In related developments, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) announced a significant expansion of public interest litigation to protect cultural relics and heritage sites.

Within the first five months of 2025 alone, the SPP filed 2,160 cases aimed at safeguarding these treasures.

On the same day as the announcement, the SPP pledged to collaborate with the National Cultural Heritage Administration on a review of Great Wall conservation efforts, assessing corrective measures and ongoing challenges associated with this iconic structure.

Moreover, as part of efforts to enhance archaeological preservation, the National Cultural Heritage Administration confirmed the designation of ten new national archaeological site parks, increasing the total number to 65 nationwide across 21 provincial-level regions.

Among the newly recognized parks are the Taosi and Dawenkou archaeological sites, which collectively illustrate various facets of the rich and diverse civilization of the Chinese nation.

An emerging trend shows luxury brands increasingly leveraging traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

Notable collaborations include fashion house LOEWE partnering with enamel craftsman Xiong Songtao, who specializes in cloisonné techniques, resulting in high-end collections that celebrate China’s cultural heritage.

This shift reflects a broader movement where international brands are tapping into local crafts to connect more deeply with the Chinese consumer base.

The market for intangible cultural heritage (ICH) products has also seen notable growth, with annual transactions surpassing 107 billion yuan in 2023, illustrating the rising demand for culturally significant goods.

Luxury brands are adapting to the evolving preferences of younger consumers, who are prioritizing homegrown designs and authentic cultural symbols.

Celebrations also attracted international visitors to the Hunan Museum, where tourists from various countries, including Iraq and South Africa, explored artifacts and the historical significance of the Han Dynasty.

This global engagement underscores the continuous interest in China's rich cultural and natural heritage.
