China's Smart Factories Drive Green Industrial Transformation

Intelligent manufacturing initiatives improve efficiency and reduce emissions in China's heavy industry.
In Tianjin, a significant transformation is unfolding at the Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC) manufacturing base where traditional factory floors are being replaced by smart factories.

The expansive 575,000-square-meter facility features more than 600 advanced pieces of energy-efficient and intelligent equipment, representing a shift towards automation and digitalization aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability.

Workers now primarily oversee operations through remote controls and sophisticated software interfaces, indicative of a paradigm shift from labor-intensive processes to automated systems.

Amid increasing criticisms regarding the environmental impact of China’s manufacturing sector—traditionally viewed as energy-intensive and polluting—the COOEI base reflects a national trend towards green development initiated in 2012. The introduction of automated machinery for processes such as cutting, grinding, assembly, and welding has led to a reported 90 percent automation in plate cutting and a 70 percent automation rate in deck panel welding, yielding productivity increases of over 20 percent compared to conventional methods.

This transition aligns with China's broader policy objectives outlined in its 14th five-year plan, which aims to reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 13.5 percent by 2025.

The Chinese government is actively promoting the integration of digital technologies across various industries, positioning more than 30,000 basic-level smart factories and over 1,200 advanced facilities across essential manufacturing sectors.

By 2024, statistics indicated that energy consumption per unit of GDP had decreased by more than 26 percent, alongside a 35 percent reduction in carbon emissions.

The COOEC facility represents a microcosm of these achievements, employing innovations such as an integrated intelligent manufacturing management platform which has reduced steel usage by 10 percent.

As part of this green initiative, COOEC has expanded its solar energy capacity to produce 2.6 million kWh annually, covering approximately 25 percent of its energy needs while also influencing its suppliers to pursue green certifications.

To date, over 140 COOEI suppliers have received such recognition, demonstrating the company's commitment to extending green manufacturing principles throughout its supply chain.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China had registered 6,430 green factories as of January 2024, marking a significant stride towards environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The goal is now set for green factory output to constitute over 40 percent of total manufacturing output by 2030, underscoring the emphasis on resource efficiency and sustainability in the industrial sector.

This commitment to sustainability not only impacts traditional heavy industries but also integrates emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence into operational workflows, reflecting a responsive and adaptive manufacturing strategy aimed at fostering high-quality development in the evolving global economic landscape.
