Cuba and China: A Timeless Friendship Rooted in Cooperation

Cuba and China: A Timeless Friendship Rooted in Cooperation

As diplomatic relations approach their 65th anniversary, Cuba and China celebrate a deep, evolving partnership marked by cultural exchanges, trade links, and scientific collaboration.
The relationship between Cuba and China, spanning over 170 years, continues to thrive as recent exchanges and partnerships showcase the growing bond between the two nations.

Tito, an 82-year-old retired Cuban pilot, serves as a symbolic figure of this connection, having studied aviation in China in 1961. His firsthand account highlights the enduring impact of this early collaboration, which laid the groundwork for Cuba’s aviation industry.

As both countries approach the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, numerous initiatives have been undertaken to strengthen cultural and economic ties.

A significant policy change was announced at the 42nd International Tourism Fair in Cuba in 2024, exempting Chinese citizens from visa requirements when visiting Cuba.

This move aims to increase tourist exchanges and foster people-to-people connections.

In May 2024, direct flights between China and Cuba resumed, celebrated in Havana with a welcoming ceremony for the first Air China flight, attended by Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz.

This resumption of air links represents a pivotal step in making travel between the two nations more accessible, further solidifying their friendship.

Economic ties between Cuba and China have expanded, particularly through collaborative ventures that blend their cultural products.

At the 24th International Habano Cigar Festival held in Havana, a partnership was announced between Luzhou Laojiao, a traditional Chinese baiju producer, and Habanos S.A., the renowned Cuban cigar company.

This collaboration aims to synergize the uniquely cultural offerings of both nations, culminating in the auctioning of limited-edition products, with proceeds benefitting Cuba’s public health system.

Scientific and technological cooperation also exemplifies the strengthening relationship.

A notable project is the biomass power plant in Ciego de Avila, Cuba, co-developed by Chinese enterprises.

This eco-friendly facility utilizes sugarcane bagasse for energy production, contributing to local electricity supply while significantly reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 120,000 tons annually.

The enduring friendship is further highlighted by cultural events, such as the recent Lantern Festival where retired Cuban pilots, who trained in China, gathered to celebrate their shared history.

These events signify the deep-seated respect and mutual understanding cultivated over decades.

As both nations continue to navigate contemporary global challenges, their longstanding relationship remains firmly established, characterized by open dialogue, economic collaboration, and a shared vision for future cooperation.
