Chinese Table Tennis Team Advances Amid Racket Incident in Doha Championships

The Chinese team's participation in the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships continues following a controversy regarding damaged equipment.
The Chinese table tennis team is proceeding with their schedule at the ongoing ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, despite a recent incident involving player Wang Chuqin's damaged racket.

The event, which runs from May 17 to May 25, features multiple competitions, including men's doubles, mixed doubles, and both men’s and women’s singles.

On Wednesday, Lin Shidong participated in three matches, securing a spot in the round of 16 of the men's singles by defeating Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson.

However, in the mixed doubles, Lin and his partner Kuai Man were defeated by the Japanese pair Maharu Yoshimura and Satsuki Odo with a score of 3-1, resulting in their elimination from semifinal contention.

Wang Chuqin, ranked as the World No. 2 in men's singles, showcased strong performance in the third round of the men's singles, overcoming Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting with scores of 12-10, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7. He is set to face French player Simon Gauzy in the next round.

The controversy began on Monday when Wang noticed cracks on the rubber of his racket just before a mixed doubles match against Brazilian duo Bruna Takahashi and Hugo Calderano.

He opted to use a backup racket for the match.

This incident recalls a similar occurrence during the Paris Olympics, where Wang's racket was damaged, leading to his exit from the competition.

Wang acknowledged feeling unsettled initially due to the incident but emphasized that he has learned to cope with such challenges following his Olympic experience.

He expressed confidence in overcoming distractions during matches.

Following the eventful day, a meeting was held between the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) to address the racket damage issue.

The CTTA proposed three main recommendations: ensuring team staff can accompany their rackets through the entire inspection process to prevent unauthorized access, replacing the current testing containers with larger and safer alternatives, and implementing video recording of the inspection process.

In response, the ITTF agreed to allow each team to assign a staff member to accompany their rackets during inspection and committed to providing A4-sized envelopes as containers for testing.

They will also investigate the cause of the racket damage and report on their findings.

The championships are a significant event in the lead-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, encompassing various formats of play: singles matches are conducted in a best-of-seven format, while doubles matches are best-of-five.

The organizing committee has taken steps to improve the handling of rackets, including changing their packaging from hard cases to more flexible paper bags, as confirmed by reports from local media.
