Chinese Football Association Announces National Team Squad for World Cup Asian Qualifiers

The 27-man squad features emerging talents and returning stars as China prepares for crucial matches against Indonesia and Bahrain in June.
The Chinese Football Association (CFA) has officially announced a 27-man squad intended for training ahead of the critical World Cup Asian qualifiers scheduled for June.

The squad includes promising Under-20 players, such as Wang Yudong from Zhejiang FC and Liu Chengyu from Shanghai Shenhua.

Wang Yudong is currently among the top scorers in the Chinese Super League (CSL), having netted eight goals in 12 appearances, making him a key player in the national team's forward line.

Liu Chengyu has also made a notable contribution, scoring three goals in four matches this season.

As part of their World Cup qualifying campaign, the Chinese national team faces a pivotal challenge, requiring two victories to maintain their hopes for advancement.

They will first visit Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 5, followed by a home match against Bahrain in Chongqing on June 10.

With the domestic leagues on a break until mid-June, the national team will have the opportunity to convene and train as a unit.

Notably, the squad will see the return of star striker Wu Lei from Shanghai Port, who has recovered from knee surgery that sidelined him since the beginning of 2025. His presence is expected to bolster the team's attacking options significantly.

Additionally, the squad will include Yang Mingyang, a player who recently transitioned from the Swiss U21 team to Chengdu Rongcheng.

His addition is timely, especially following the suspension of midfielder Xie Wenneng from Shandong Luneng for the match against Indonesia.

Historically, China holds a favorable record against Indonesia, having previously won their last encounter 2-1 in October 2024 during the Asian qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Indonesia announced their own squad on May 18, featuring 32 players, including 18 who are naturalized citizens.

Among them is Kevin Diks, previously of Borussia Mönchengladbach and a former Netherlands U21 international.

Indonesia achieved notable victories in recent months, including a 2-0 win against Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 triumph over Bahrain, indicating their competitive form.

Both teams will ultimately reduce their rosters to 23 players ahead of the qualifiers, adding to the anticipation surrounding these crucial matches.
