Chinese Digital Content Expands Global Footprint

Micro dramas, video games, and online literature gain international recognition and audience.
In recent years, Chinese digital content has made significant strides on the global stage, encompassing micro dramas, video games, and online literature, which have become integral parts of entertainment for many audiences worldwide.

According to the National Radio and Television Administration, Chinese micro-drama platforms have amassed over 470 million downloads globally across more than 300 apps in over 200 countries and regions.

A notable example is ReelShort, a micro-drama platform under Crazy Maple Studio, which has gained traction with its short, engaging episodes featuring rapid plot developments, primarily consumed through smart devices.

Nan Yapeng, vice president of Crazy Maple Studio, indicated that the company has localized its micro dramas for global distribution and established collaborations with Hollywood, leading to a significant local workforce.

The gaming sector mirrors this success, with titles like "Black Myth: Wukong" capturing the attention of gamers around the world.

Established franchises such as "Genshin Impact" and "Honkai: Star Rail" continue to dominate download charts in over 100 countries.

Data from the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA) reveals that China's gaming industry achieved overseas revenues of approximately 18.56 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, reflecting a 13.39 percent increase from the previous year.

The innovative integration of traditional cultural elements in games like "Genshin Impact" and "Black Myth: Wukong" highlights China's ability to blend its heritage with global gaming trends.

The recognition of Chinese online literature has also grown internationally.

In November 2024, the British Library enriched its collection by including ten online novels by Chinese authors, expanding from its initial inclusion of Chinese literature in 2022. The CADPA reported that revenue from China's online literature sector in overseas markets reached 4.35 billion yuan (approximately 606 million U.S. dollars) in 2023, marking a 7.06 percent year-on-year increase.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is poised to facilitate further global integration of Chinese digital content.

WebNovel, an online reading platform, introduced over 2,000 AI-translated works in 2024, while gaming company miHoYo has filed numerous patents in AI and cloud gaming technologies, enhancing its capabilities in content production.

Li Ming, CEO of NewTV, an internet television platform, emphasized that AI technology will play a crucial role in expanding the global reach of Chinese culture, potentially transforming content exports from niche offerings to broader distribution.
