Chinese Animated Film 'Ne Zha 2' Breaks Box Office Records, Marks Cultural Milestone

'Ne Zha 2' surpasses 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' to become the fifth highest-grossing film globally, achieving historical success in the animated cinema sector.
The Chinese animated film 'Ne Zha 2' has achieved significant box office success, surpassing Disney's 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' to secure the fifth position on the all-time global box office charts.

As of March 15, 2025, the film has grossed over 15.019 billion yuan (approximately 2.09 billion U.S. dollars) within just 45 days of its release, which coincided with the Chinese New Year on January 29.

This milestone marks 'Ne Zha 2' as the first film to gross 1 billion U.S. dollars in a single market, the first non-Hollywood film to reach this financial threshold, and the highest-grossing animated film globally.

Directed by Yang Yu, known by his pseudonym Jiaozi, the film is a sequel to the 2019 animated feature 'Ne Zha,' which garnered a box office total of 5 billion yuan and dominated the Chinese box office that year.

According to ticketing platform Maoyan, over 98 percent of 'Ne Zha 2's' revenue has been generated from the Chinese mainland, underscoring the film’s appeal in its domestic market.

The storyline, deeply rooted in Chinese mythology, follows Nezha and his ally Aobing in their journey of self-discovery and defiance against predestined fates.

The narrative, rich with universal themes, has resonated with diverse audiences, contributing to the film's success.

Critics and analysts have highlighted 'Ne Zha 2’s' cultural significance, noting that this achievement strengthens the confidence of creators and illustrates the growth potential of China's movie industry.

Lai Li, a Maoyan analyst, remarked that the film showcases the resilience and ambitions of the Chinese market.

The technical aspects of the film also received acclaim, with nearly 2,000 visual effects shots created by 138 animation studios.

Following its initial release in Australia and New Zealand on February 13 and North America a day later, 'Ne Zha 2' broke the long-standing opening weekend record for Chinese-language films in North America.

The film has continued its international rollout, with recent screenings in regions such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, and planned expansions into European markets.

It recently held preview screenings in the UK and Ireland and is set to have an official release in these countries on March 21, with subsequent releases scheduled across Germany, France, and Spain.

The emotional resonance of 'Ne Zha 2' extends to audiences who have connected with its themes of prejudice and resilience.

Viewers have shared personal reflections about the film, indicating its broader societal impact.

The success of 'Ne Zha 2' has contributed to a record-high box office revenue in China during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, signifying a rebound in the film industry after a decline in earnings in 2024. Film critic Dong Wenxin noted the film's role in expanding the market for theatrical releases and supporting quality content.

As 'Ne Zha 2' continues to captivate audiences worldwide, it serves as a cultural bridge, illustrating China's rich mythology and offering a new perspective to global viewers.

The film’s creator, Jiaozi, expressed a vision of evolving the 'Ne Zha' series beyond entertainment, aiming to resonate with international audiences on a deeper cultural level.
