Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Boosts Higher Education in Burundi

Fifty Burundian postgraduates receive scholarships in a ceremony emphasizing international educational cooperation.
In an event underscoring the strengthening educational ties between China and Burundi, 50 postgraduate students from the University of Burundi have been awarded the prestigious Chinese Ambassador Scholarship for the year 2024. The scholarship ceremony took place on Friday at the university's Mutanga campus, located in the Rohero zone of Bujumbura, Burundi’s bustling commercial capital.

Attendees included the Chinese Ambassador to Burundi, Zhao Jiangping, and the University Rector, Audace Manirabona.

Rector Manirabona expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support from China, highlighting the scholarship as both material aid and a sign of deep-seated international solidarity.

'This Chinese financial support for Burundian students in need goes beyond simple material assistance.

It represents a powerful sign of international solidarity and serves as a strategic investment in the future of Burundian youth by the Chinese embassy to Burundi,' he stated.

Furthermore, Manirabona reflected on the scholarships' tangible benefits, noting improvements in students' abilities to attend their classes and succeed academically since the support began in 2018.

Echoing the sentiments of collaboration, Ambassador Zhao described education as essential to the prospects of any nation, emphasizing the shared educational priorities of China and Burundi.

'China and Burundi share the same vision in this regard and regard education as a priority sector in their bilateral cooperation,' Zhao remarked.

The collaboration has been multifaceted, encompassing more than just scholarships.

In 2024 alone, China hosted 54 Burundian students for advanced studies, and over 300 Burundians participated in seminars and visits to China to enhance their knowledge and skills in various domains.

Such initiatives reflect the broader China-Burundi partnership, which has been robust since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1963.

The partnership extends beyond education into areas like infrastructure, agriculture, health, and energy, but educational endeavors remain a linchpin of bilateral relations.

Since the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Burundi over ten years ago, over 30,000 Burundians have engaged in training, and more than 200 scholarships have been allocated to institute scholars.

Ambassador Zhao pledged continued cooperation and support, emphasizing a commitment to fostering educational and cultural exchanges that benefit both nations.

These actions underline China’s strategic vision, which sees burgeoning educational and developmental links as foundational to sustainable and long-lasting international partnerships.
