China's Xuelong-2 Embarks on Pioneering Ecosystem Survey in the Amundsen Sea

The state-of-the-art icebreaker sets sail from New Zealand, aiming to deliver vital data on Antarctica's marine environment
WELLINGTON, Jan. 11, 2025 (Xinhua) — The Chinese research icebreaker Xuelong 2, known as Snow Dragon 2, has departed from the port of Christchurch, New Zealand, marking the beginning of a month-long mission to survey the marine ecosystem of the Amundsen Sea, one of the least explored frontiers of the Antarctic region.

The journey commenced on Thursday following preparations and a significant midway replenishment at Lyttelton Port, where the vessel took on fresh supplies of fruits, vegetables, and fuel, and welcomed 38 members of its oceanic research team.

This mission, part of China's 41st Antarctic expedition, aims to provide a comprehensive investigation into the biological ecology and environmental conditions of the Amundsen Sea.

Captain Luo Guangfu, head of the oceanic team, detailed that the survey will encompass studies in biological ecology, water and sediment analysis, atmospheric observations, and pollutant distribution.

Variations in these parameters are critical for understanding the impacts of climate change in polar climates.

The journey of the Xuelong 2 highlights Christchurch's prominent role in Antarctic exploration, as emphasized by Chinese Consul General He Ying.

The city, home to the strategically significant Lyttelton Port, enjoys a global reputation as an essential gateway for expeditions to the icy continent.

"We will exploit the optimal conditions presented by the Southern Hemisphere's summer throughout February to conduct in-depth marine ecosystem surveys," stated Luo.

The research is anticipated to cover a wide array of scientific domains including physical oceanography, marine chemistry, biology, and geology, potentially enriching global scientific understanding of the Amundsen Sea's existing conditions and trends.

Expeditions such as this are pivotal for advancing knowledge of Antarctica's ecosystems, key indicators of global environmental health.

As climate change poses growing threats to polar regions, the data gathered by the Xuelong 2 will be invaluable for international research efforts aimed at safeguarding these fragile environments.
