China's Wang Xiyu Advances to Australian Open Second Round with Dominant Performance

The 23-year-old tennis player showcases her potential by defeating Julia Grabher in straight sets and looks to reclaim her top form.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 14, 2025 -- In a commanding display of skill and power, China's Wang Xiyu surged into the second round of the Australian Open women's singles on Tuesday by decisively defeating Austria's Julia Grabher in straight sets.

The 23-year-old Wang, who has been navigating the challenges of professional tennis since her distinguished junior career, used her formidable groundstrokes to secure a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Wang's impressive performance on the court, characterized by 15 winners and a commanding serve, set the tone for what her supporters hope will be a successful tournament.

Previously having reached a career-high WTA ranking of 49 in January 2023 and achieving her best Grand Slam result with a third-round appearance at the 2022 US Open, Wang's potential was evident.

However, her ranking slipped in 2024, when she faced early exits in the first round at three of the four major tournaments.

Entering the Australian Open ranked 108th, Wang aimed to make an early statement against the 415th-ranked Grabher.

Playing in sunny late morning conditions, she quickly seized control of the match by breaking Grabher in the opening game, capitalizing on her opponent's errors.

Wang's aggressive baseline play kept Grabher on the defensive, and she further solidified her dominance by breaking serve again in the fifth game, concluding the first set in just 26 minutes.

Maintaining her momentum into the second set, Wang broke Grabher in the fourth game.

However, she encountered unexpected challenges, faltering with her serve and committing double faults that allowed Grabher to break back in the fifth and seventh games.

Despite these difficulties on her serve, Wang managed to regroup and refocus her efforts.

She eventually subdued Grabher's resistance after an hour and 20 minutes on the court, celebrating her triumph with a fist pump.

Wang's victory propels her into the second round, where she is set to face either eighth seed Emma Navarro or rising American star Peyton Stearns.

As she continues her quest at Melbourne Park, Wang hopes to build on her performance and reclaim the form that once placed her among the sport's top competitors.
