China's New Energy Vehicles Surge as Green Transition Gains Momentum

China achieves a historic NEV production milestone in 2024, solidifying its leadership in the global push for clean-energy vehicles.
In a landmark development for China's automotive industry, the nation surpassed an annual production of 10 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) for the first time as of November 14, 2024. This achievement not only underscores China's role as the world's largest NEV producer and consumer but also highlights the concerted efforts of Chinese manufacturers to meet ambitious carbon reduction goals.

Xin Guobin, vice minister of industry and information technology, emphasized the historical importance of this milestone, attributing it to the steadfast endeavours of domestic carmakers.

China has dominated global NEV production and sales for the past nine years, contributing over 60 percent to the worldwide total in 2023. The momentum has carried into 2024, with more than 11.26 million NEVs sold in the first 11 months alone, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase of 35.6 percent, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

This exponential growth mirrors the NEV retail penetration rate, which exceeded 50 percent for the first time in July, indicating a definitive consumer shift from traditional internal combustion vehicles to electric alternatives.

The China Passenger Car Association's secretary general, Cui Dongshu, cites favorable government policies, such as subsidies for trading in older vehicles, as key growth drivers.

Consumers trading an old car for an NEV are eligible for a 20,000 yuan subsidy, surpassing the 15,000 yuan offered for new fuel-powered cars.

Chinese brands have solidified their market presence, with domestic NEV passenger vehicles representing a 70.1 percent share of total car sales by October.

Leading NEV manufacturer BYD set a remarkable new monthly sales record for global manufacturers by delivering 502,657 units in October.

Other top makers like Xiaomi and Leapmotor also surpassed their annual sales goals ahead of schedule.

Exports play a crucial role in China's NEV sector, with 1.86 million units shipped overseas between January and November, marking a 13 percent rise from the previous year.

Despite challenges such as increased tariffs impacting European export growth, analysts predict future rebounds.

European markets, along with Belgium, Brazil, and the UK, are among the top destinations for these exports.

Projections for 2024 position NEV sales to exceed 13 million units, boosting China's auto sales to over 31 million units, noted Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of CAAM.

Looking forward to 2025, burgeoning domestic and international markets present significant opportunities for growth in the sector.

China remains committed to its green transition, as indicated by policy shifts at the Central Economic Work Conference aiming to enhance carbon tracking and reduce emissions.

China's 2030 goal to elevate non-fossil energy's share in total energy consumption aligns with global trends, where electric vehicles are anticipated to comprise 45 percent of car sales in 2030, increasing to 55 percent by 2035, according to the International Energy Agency.

Affordable EVs have proven pivotal to their widespread adoption, with China standing as a key point of reference.

Analysts advocate for a focus on restructuring and innovation in 2025 to maintain China's competitive edge.

Intelligence and technological advancement are crucial for sustaining growth.

Su Bo, director of the national intelligent manufacturing expert committee, urged automakers to prioritize these areas, ensuring industrial progress and high-quality development.
