China's Hydrogen-Powered eVTOL Revolutionizes Low-Altitude Air Travel

China's Hydrogen-Powered eVTOL Revolutionizes Low-Altitude Air Travel

The successful test flight of a ton-level liquid hydrogen unmanned aircraft promises significant advancements in clean energy aviation.
In a landmark achievement, China's first ton-level liquid hydrogen-powered electric unmanned vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft successfully completed its test flight in Baoji city, located in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

This development has been heralded as a new frontier in the commercial utilization of liquid hydrogen and marks significant progress in the burgeoning low-altitude economy, as reported by Shaanxi Fabu, the official social media platform for Shaanxi Province.

The cutting-edge eVTOL was realized through the collaborative efforts of several pioneering companies, including Shaanxi Tongchen Heguang Cryogenic Technology Co Ltd, Dreamfly Technology Co Ltd, and Qing Power Technology Co Ltd. The aircraft's capabilities are notable: following a single refuel of liquid hydrogen, it can sustain flight for 4 to 5 hours, effectively covering distances between 800 to 1,000 kilometers at an average speed of 240 kilometers per hour.

This information was provided by Shaanxi Tongchen Heguang Cryogenic Technology Co, which supplied the liquid hydrogen essential for the test.

Li Yongxin, chief engineer at Shaanxi Tongchen Heguang Cryogenic Technology Co, highlighted the substantive benefits of liquid hydrogen over conventional fuels and lithium batteries.

As an emission-free clean energy source, liquid hydrogen fuel cells offer resilience against energy loss under extreme low-temperature conditions—an advantage over lithium batteries.

Additionally, the endurance of these hydrogen fuel cells significantly surpasses that of lithium batteries.

The success of the test flight has underscored the potential for practical applications of liquid hydrogen, indicating a path towards its extensive adoption.

Li Yongxin emphasized the broad spectrum of potential uses for liquid hydrogen-powered eVTOLs, which range from firefighting and transportation to agricultural operations such as irrigation, sowing, and fruit picking.

The rapid development of China's low-altitude economy aligns with these technological advancements.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China projects a substantial increase in the low-altitude market, forecasting growth from 500 billion yuan ($68.19 billion) in 2023 to 1.5 trillion yuan by 2025, with expectations to reach 3.5 trillion yuan by 2035, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

This milestone in clean energy aviation reflects China's commitment to expanding its aerospace industry while championing environmental sustainability.

The integration of liquid hydrogen technology into aircraft systems promises to transform various sectors by enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
