China's Education Minister Highlights AI-Driven Reforms in Education

Technological advancements are set to reshape China's educational landscape, emphasizing core disciplines and interdisciplinary talent development.
BEIJING - At the annual session of China's national legislature, Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) on the education sector, describing it as a significant opportunity for reform and development.

Speaking during an interview, Huai addressed inquiries about advancements in AI technologies, including the developments surrounding DeepSeek and humanoid robots.

Huai articulated that every technological revolution and industrial transformation poses substantial challenges to society, particularly in the realm of education, while simultaneously offering opportunities for progressive change.

He highlighted that these changes necessitate comprehensive reforms in China's higher education system.

The minister outlined specific initiatives aimed at enhancing educational quality, including a focus on strengthening core courses and developing key faculty and essential textbooks in critical areas such as mathematics and computer science.

These subjects have been identified as fundamental to aligning with national strategic goals.

Additionally, Huai stated that China will prioritize the cultivation of talent in emerging and interdisciplinary fields, advocating for deeper integration between industry, scientific research, and educational institutions.

This approach is part of a broader effort to produce graduates equipped with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving job market influenced by technological advancements.

With approximately 4 million postgraduate students and 39 million undergraduates currently enrolled in universities and colleges across China, the educational landscape is vast and pivotal in shaping the country’s future workforce.

In the realm of basic education, Huai announced plans for the release of a white paper on AI education in 2025. This document is expected to outline strategies for enhancing students' digital and AI-related literacy and skills, thereby preparing the next generation for the challenges and opportunities presented by a technology-driven world.
